Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Presenter of the BBC's Gardeners' World television series, Greenwood (The American Horticultural Society Pests & Diseases) offers a gardening book short on passages praising particular plants, models for meticulous plantings, and suggestions about garden styles and palettes. Instead, it focuses on instructing the average, interested gardener-presumed to be a busy and self-sufficient individual-in maintaining an existing home garden. Arranged as a month-by-month series of tasks with explanatory notes and instructions, the book is designed to be read in support of particular gardening tasks rather than cover to cover. Greenwood highlights the most essential tasks and connects discussion of plant diseases and pests to the times when they are most problematic. All potential elements of the home garden, e.g., flowers, lawn, fixtures, water features, and fruits and vegetables, receive attention. Useful details ground Greenwood's emphasis on efficient, effective garden work. American gardeners in USDA zones 5 and 6 are the audience most likely to find the monthly activities congruent with their climate conditions, though adaptation of the information to other zones is certainly feasible. Recommended for larger gardening collections.-Jennifer Burek Pierce, Indiana Univ. SLIS, Indianapolis Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
