Overview

Skylar McHenry knew the love of her parents and a doting grandfather until her sixth year was marked by the tragic loss of her mother. When her father's secret past as a pirate came to light, father and daughter fled to a life at sea. Although Daniel McHenry's life had changed and he now robbed pirates to return the stolen goods to their rightful owners, his ship was captured by authorities, and he was hung for piracy.

Skye grew up in an orphanage, little more than a servant and shunned by everyone around her. Now a young woman, each day Skye faces is marked by some new struggle. Her only hope has been to rely on her heavenly Father's care and comfort, and the solace of her best friend Will, who has become more than dear to her.

Just when an unexpected encounter with her grandfather gives Skye a small glimmer of hope that things might change in her favor, her world is shattered. She is awakened in the night by cannon blasts. Pirates storm the orphanage, drag her away into the night, and force her aboard their ship. The cruel captain's intentions are clear. He will extract from her, through any means necessary, the location of the hidden treasure rewarded to Daniel by those whose belongings he had returned. For Skye to divulge the location would mean breaking the last promise she made to her father. She's certain she never will, but what happens when the lives of those dearest to her are at stake?

The Pirate Daughter's Promise is full of daring high seas adventure; sweet, wholesome romance; surprising discoveries; unlikely new friends; and the rewards of trusting in God even when life seems impossible.

Author Molly Evangeline is a recent home school graduatewho loves to journal, sew historical costumes, and go horseback riding and hiking in the woods along the river in Wisconsin where she lives with her parents and two younger brothers. She has enjoyed writing since she was eight years old.

Skye, the daughter of a pirate, has been raised in a orphanage since the death of her father. When Captain Kelley, one of the most ruthless pirate on the seas, kidnaps her and attempts to force her to tell him the location of her father's hidden treasure, no one but fellow orphan Will and their friend Matthew the blacksmith care enough to chase down her kidnappers. But Captain Kelley's patience is wearing thin. Just how far is he willing to go to learn the location of Skye's treasure? And how far will Skye go to keep her promise? This book is fairly short and wastes no time diving right into the action. The first few chapters are a bit of an info dump, but after that the story sails along quite smoothy and with a very strong message of faith woven throughout it. I liked how emphasis is made on holding onto faith even in trying times and how God makes all things work together for good, although at times things seemed to fall into place just a bit too neatly. Overall, this is a very clean read and well worth a solid four star rating. I look forward to reading the sequels.

This book takes readers on quite the adventure!  I truly enjoyed it.  I have to say, it’s definitely a Christian Pirates of the Caribbean, but without Captain Jack Sparrow.  The main girl is kidnapped by pirates, a young man named Will fights to go after her, they stop at Tortuga, etc.  While some might not like the close similarities, I really enjoyed it.  It was fun, whimsical, daring, and entertaining. The story was engaging, and I found myself reluctant to put the book down.  There were many plot twists that I definitely did not expect – several which kept me on the edge of my seat.  Kate’s character was well-developed and relatable. However, the writing in this book – while acceptable – isn’t strong.  There is heavy use of adverbs and extra dialogue/inner thoughts that I often felt wasn’t necessary and rather distracting.  Other than Kate, the characters were pretty flat and lacking in development.  Even though I could read their inner thoughts, I never truly *felt* their emotion – aside from in the prologue.  Also, the POV was an issue in several scenes.  For example, in one paragraph, the POV could change from Skye, to Captain Kelley, to Will.  I was often disoriented. Even with the writing issues, I loved the storyline and thoroughly enjoyed this book.  I recommend it to anyone who loves adventure, pirates, strong faith, clean morals, wholesome romance, and young love.  I give it a solid 3 ½ stars.

Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. You feel the emotion in the characters, wanting them to succeed and the villian to be defeated. I also loved the historical aspect. The author can really paint a picture. There are many twists and turns with a delightful ending. Can't wait to see what is next.
