Captain Firebeard, helmsman Morgan O'Meany and the crew of the Horrible Haddock make "the knees of honest seafaring folk... shake like jelly." But they meet their match in Molly, a small but sturdy girl whose thick auburn ponytails rival the Captain's bushy beard. Like a Little Red Riding Hood of the high seas, Molly is sailing a skiff to her grandmother's house when she is snared "like a herring" and tossed aboard the Haddock for ransom. "If I told you my mother's name,... you'd cry like a baby!" Molly snarls, to the pirates' hearty but short-lived amusement. Funke and Meyer, whose The Princess Knight sets a precedent for this feisty heroine, do not expect Molly to defeat her kidnappers single-handed. Instead, Molly sends messages in empty rum bottles until her mother, the operatically outsize Barbarous Bertha, arrives with an imposing and equally scurvy lot of pirate women. Against the changeable turquoise-to-blue-gray sea and white sky, the blazing-orange hair of Molly, Firebeard and Bertha makes them centers of attention, and readers will notice a black cat becoming Molly's silent ally. All Molly wanted to do was visit her grandmother but trouble awaits her in the high seas. One might be apt to draw comparisons to Little Red Riding Hood, but they end there in this cleverly written story. Molly, a pirate girl, and strong female protagonist stands up to Captain Firebeard and his loathsome pirate crew of twenty aboard the Horrible Haddock when they kidnap her from the boat she was sailing. Not only do they fail in getting Molly's parents' names and address and a hefty ransom for kidnapping her, but the Firebeard crew is in store for a surprise when they eventually meet her mother. Molly, noncompliant to their demands, is forced to clean and peel potatoes, and scrub the deck as punishment. While the pirates drink and dance, Molly covertly has been placing messages in empty bottles and sending them out to sea. Finally, Molly's mother, Barbarous Bertha, a female pirate with a female crew of her own, teaches Captain Firebeard and his men a lesson they will never forget. The illustrations are comical, including the flaming red hair of Barbarous Bertha. In the soaring popularity of pirates among children, it is wonderful to see female pirates and a leading example of one who insists in never giving up despite the odds. 2003, The Chicken House/Scholastic, Ages 5 to 8.

K-Gr 2-Molly is sailing off to visit her grandmother when she is captured by ferocious Captain Firebeard and his cutthroat crew. Their intention is to hold her for ransom, but the stalwart girl refuses to divulge her parents' names and address despite endless chores and threats of being fed to the sharks. Instead, she waits until the pirates fall asleep and tosses messages tucked into bottles out to sea. Caught in the act, she is about to be thrown overboard when rescue arrives in the person of her mother, the pirate Barbarous Bertha. Firebeard and his crew must now take over Molly's chores, and she sails happily off to Grandma's house. While the plot is mildly amusing, it is also thin and predictable. If the intention was to make a feminist statement, the story falls short of the mark, unless the message is that girls, too, can be nasty bullies. Meyer's cartoon sketches resemble Quentin Blake's work, but some of the details are lost in the odd choice of a murky gray for skin tones. In this well-translated humorous turnabout from the author of The Princess Knight (2004), similar themes of female strength and empowerment come through protagonist, Molly, a little girl in her own sailboat who's kidnapped by pirates. Forced to peel potatoes, patch the sails and scrub the deck, Molly refuses to give her parents' names and address for a ransom note and cleverly outsmarts the ruffian Captain Firebeard and his fearsome crew. She secretly carries out a plan to communicate with her family through messages tucked into several empty bottles tossed into the sea. When her plan is discovered by mate Morgan O'Meany, and she's about to be fed to the sharks, the dreaded Barbarous Bertha, a pirate, who just happens to be Molly's mom, comes cruising in, surprising Captain Firebeard and his petrified bunch. Tables turned, the Firebeard buccaneers are now prisoners of their own game, scrubbing the deck and polishing Bertha's boots 14 times a week. Meyer's bright, droll mixed-media pen-and-ink paintings of bushy bearded, scruffy, pot-bellied males countered by a voluminous slightly grotesque matriarch with her buxom throng add to the amusing comeuppance. Cornelia Funke is Germany's bestselling children's author after J. K. Rowling and R. L. Stine. In the fall of 2002, she made her brilliant debut in the English-language market with the release of the New York Times bestseller The Thief Lord. She is also the author of an acclaimed YA fantasy trilogy that includes Inkheart, Inkspell, and Inkdeath.

Biography

One of the most successful children's authors of our day, multi-award-winner Cornelia Funke started out as a social worker focused on the needs of disadvantaged youngsters. She enrolled in a post-graduate course at the Hamburg State College of Design, and left social work in the mid-1980s to begin a career as a children's book illustrator. However, the books she was commissioned to work on were prosaic and unimaginative, and she soon decided to try her hand at writing stories of her own.

An ardent fan of such childhood classics as Tolkien's Ring Trilogy and the tales of C. S. Lewis and J. M. Barrie, Funke was naturally drawn to the world of fantasy. She explained her attraction in a 2006 interview with the genre blog Writer Unboxed: " [T]he wonderful thing about fantasy is that it is the oldest way of story telling -- to clad what we feel and fear into disguises and make them more clear, to pass the borders of our every day life and use our imagination for travels into unknown worlds and unlimited experiences."

Although Funke was an immediate success in her native Germany, she was largely unknown outside Europe -- that is, until a young bilingual fan wrote to a British publishing firm inquiring why her favorite author's books were not available in English. The publisher hunted down what was, at the time, Funke's most recent book (The Thief Lord) and, in 2002, published it in translation. Already the recipient of several literary honors in Europe, the engaging YA fantasy went on to win the 2002 Book Sense Book of the Year Award.

One by one, as they are translated into English and published in America, Funke's wonderful stories have become huge bestsellers. Her ingenuity, imagination, and artistry shine in stand-alone novels like Dragon Rider and the Inkworld Trilogy -- Inkheart (2003), Inkspell (2005), and Inkdeath (2008). She has also produced picture books for younger readers, including The Wildest Brother, Pirate Girl, and Princess Knight. Fans who worry that this natural-born storyteller will run out of ideas can take solace in an author interview conducted in 2008 by Britain's Daily Telegraph. Asked if she had many more books in mind, Funke replied, "Oh yes, I am quite sure I won't be able to write them all down in a lifetime."
