Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"This rowdy, rousing yarn will be a real treasure for any pirate enthusiast or young adventurer." -Kirkus Reviews
Children's Literature
In the jolly rhyming cadence of a sea chantey, we follow Pirate Captain Pup and his doggy crew on the good ship Rover out of Boston. They sail to an island where they dig up a treasure marked on their map and stow it on board. Up to this point they have avoided the ship and cat crew on their tail, but the cats catch up and board them, swords drawn, demanding the gold treasure. A furious battle ensues, from one end of the ship to the other. But when the cats discover that the treasure is only bones, they return to their own boat in disgust. The canine pirates then sail home to their cheering families and friends, with stories of their bold deeds and bones galore. Action-filled scenes bleed off all sides of the spreads. Colored pencil and watercolors on tan-toned pages create a properly-attired Hollywood version of a pirate crew and uniformed feline attackers, as well as a sailing ship complete with ornate figurehead. The dogs and cats, including some alluring females seductively waving from windows, are loaded with personality in this humorous pirate adventure. Do not overlook the end-papers. 2005, Chronicle Books, Ages 4 to 8.

Children's Literature - Carolyn Mott Ford
This book moves along with the rhythm of a sea shanty, making the story fun to read aloud. Pirate Pup is sleeping soundly when the first mate taps on the window to awaken him because the Rover is about to set sail. Pirate Pup straightens his eye patch, bids farewell to his parents, and promises to return within the week. Then he gathers his crew and urges them to depart while their enemies, the cats, are asleep. The pirates sail along until they near the coast of Grenada. They row to shore in a dinghy, blithely unaware of the cats to the north. The pups dig up their treasure, return to the ship, and settle in for the night. The cats attack the ship, climbing aboard and demanding the treasure or the fishes. "Then the dogs trapped the cats in net, net, net,/then the dogs trapped the cats in a net." The disappointed cats realize the treasure is nothing but bones and jump into their own ship and sail away. The pups then return home to favor their families and friends with the treasure and with many a story. The excellent watercolor and colored pencil illustrations add mightily to the telling of the tale.
Kirkus Reviews
These are no ordinary pirates. Though they sport eye-patches and parrots, these adventurers are canines that sail far and wide under the command of Captain Pup. On this voyage, the dachshunds, boxers and shaggy mongrels are in search of treasure, but constantly vigilant should the dreaded cats catch up. They find the island where X marks the spot and dig up unspecified booty. Before they can reach familiar shores, the cats board their ship and demand gold. A calamitous but bloodless battle with swords and muskets ensues. When the cats discover that the sought after treasure is something quite other than gold, they hightail it. The triumphant pirate pups arrive home to tearful hugs. The stanzas of this exciting epic poem are reminiscent of Edward Lear's Owl and the Pussycat: "And toasted their brave Captain Pup, Pup, Pup / And toasted their brave Captain Pup." Rich with pirate details Rayevsky's elegant artwork, on parchment-like paper, demands thorough examination. This rowdy, rousing yarn will be a real treasure for any pirate enthusiast or young adventurer. (Picture book. 4-7)
