Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanne Javid
Meet Kylie Jean Carter. She is in second grade, her very favorite color is pink and she lives in a big, sunny, yellow house in Jacksonville, Texas. She has two brothers, T.J. and Ugly Brother, a dog who thinks he is a real person. Kylie's dream is to be a beauty queen. Actually, her dream is to be the queen of everything. In this title, she wants to be a pirate queen after giving a class book report about a female pirate named Grace O'Malley and. However, one boy in her class insists girls cannot be pirates. It is almost Halloween and with a pink pirate costume and help from a mysterious neighbor, Kylie sets out to prove him wrong. Mischievous, delightful and fun, Kylie Jean is a southern belle that will win the hearts of young girls. The eleven-chapter book is one hundred five pages and contains a table of contents, glossary, short author and illustrator bios, discussion/conversation starters, creative writing springboards, and a cookie recipe. As part of the "Kylie Jean Series," Kylie stars in many other titles. Her biggest dream is to be a queen at rodeo, party, hoop, football, drama, dancing, or whatever else catches her fancy. The story may be a good resource for classroom discussions and writings regarding friendships and stereotypes. Acknowledging Kylie's favorite color, the book is illustrated in shades of ivory, gray, black and pink. Very nicely done. Reviewer: Suzanne Javid
