Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
AGERANGE: Ages 7 up.

The cover of this gift item boasts "Learn to write in secret seafarers' codes!" and the interior page of the folder delivers on this promise by introducing, depicting, and presenting several types of pirate-related codes. This is not a true book. The folder contains explanations about The Babington Code, used by Mary Queen of Scots; The Captain Carlton's Code, a simple letter substitution; and instructions for inventing the reader's own codes (to avoid detection by ‘certain villains' that might be familiar with the codes listed). The interior folder contains sixteen half sheets of attractive off-white stationary and envelopes, two sheets of pirate themed stickers, and six postcards depicting a compass rose, a ship, and a pirate battle. This is not an appropriate purchase for a library collection, but good fun for pirate obsessed kids. Reviewer: L. F. Wade
