Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
This activity book spinoff of Long and Shannon's series (How I Became a Pirate; Pirates Don't Change Diapers) offers step-by-step guidelines for how to be a bona fide buccaneer. Readers can participate by constructing a folded newspaper pirate hat and a cardboard eye patch, while picking up the finer points of pirate manners, such as warning "yer mates" before you sneeze ("Duck and cover, ye filthy scoundrels! I'm gonna blow!"). A game of Cannonball, using colorful punch-out cards, invites more involvement, and there are plenty of opportunities for drawing, crafting, and learning swashbuckler vocabulary. Ages 5–8. (Aug.)

"Paired with Shannon's energetic acrylics of a colorful crew of pop-eyed, snaggly toothed pirates seen from a variety of zany viewpoints (including upside down) and a small boy who is clearly having the time of his life, this rollicking adventure is sure to be a favorite with the storytime crowd." School Library Journal, Laurie Edwards, West Shore School District, Camp Hill, PA How I Became a Pirate

"Long's piratical dialogue still delivers a juicy read-aloud: what reader of any age won't relish the opportunity to say "Aargh!" or declare "Rock on!" as the crew does in unison when Braid Beard orders them to rock Bonney Anne to sleep? And Shannon's voluptuously colorful and comic paintings runneth over with comic mayhem, sly details (somehow, the pirates manage to find a pirate show on Jeremy's TV) and no end of goofy expressions. Ages 3-7." Publisher's Weekly Pirates Don't Change Diapers
