Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mary Sue Preissner
This is an exciting book for the pirate devotee. It looks at piracy in all parts of the world, from the pirate beginnings in ancient Greece nearly 2000 years ago to the piracy taking place today. Learn about pirate ships, blackjacks, spyglasses, fighting dirty, treasure, corsairs, and pirate kingdoms. Each page is colorfully and attractively presented with a variety of type styles that add visual excitement. The glossary and index also contain drawings. The Rogues' gallery features brief biographies of 59 infamous pirates.
School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-5From Roman times to Viking raids to hijackings in the 1990s, Steele presents a chronological view of the life and times of pirates. His well-rounded presentation offers information about buccaneers in the Caribbean, North America, China, the Middle East, Spain, and Britain and gives a brief look at female pirates. Double-page spreads cover each topic with large-print, clearly written texts, and numerous sidebars. Similar in scope to Saviour Pirotta's Pirates and Treasures (Raintree, 1996), this title is set apart by its illustrations and reproductions, which are numerous, colorful, and lively. Wonderfully laced into the text, the pictures show pirate ships and dress from around the world, maps of routes, and flags. Minibiographies of over 50 "Rogues" are appended. A well-done book that browsers and pirate enthusiasts will enjoy.Katherine Borchert, Arlington Central Library, VA
