Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Anita Barnes Lowen
Meet Grace who is anything but graceful. So why does her mum insist she take ballet? Could it be that her mother's own thwarted ambition is behind it all? Mina is the only black girl at ballet summer camp, and subtle and not-so-subtle hints are telling her that perhaps this is not the place for someone different. "Next time I'm going to insist on at least two of you; you'd have felt better with someone like you here...Or four if we must have any..." And then there is Olly, Jenny's little brother, who says he is going to be a ballet dancer like his sister. But he is "such a little toughie with his spiky hair and rough and tumbling body" that it seems unlikely. Or is it? This collection of fifteen tales spotlights ballerinas, their dreams and disappointments, and their delight in dance. The selections include short stories and chapters from longer works, as well as two autobiographical excerpts. These sometimes funny, often poignant, tales filled with young hopes and dreams and disappointments will keep young ballerinas dancing through the pages. A list of acknowledgments at the end of the book names the longer works from which some chapters were chosen. Reviewer: Anita Barnes Lowen
