Overview

I WAS sick-sick unto death with that long agony; and when they at length unbound me, and I was permitted to sit, I felt that my senses were leaving me. The sentence-the dread sentence of death-was the last of distinct accentuation which reached my ears. After that, the sound of the inquisitorial voices seemed merged in one dreamy indeterminate hum. It conveyed to my soul the idea of revolution-perhaps from its association in fancy with the burr of a mill wheel. This only for a brief period; for presently I heard no more. Yet, for a while, I saw; but with how terrible an exaggeration! I saw the lips of the black-robed judges. They appeared to me white-whiter than the sheet upon which I trace these words-and thin even to grotesqueness; thin with the intensity of their expression of firmness-of immoveable resolution-of stern contempt of human torture.

This was honestly not a very good story.i felt the comics took away from the emotion and detail of the story.

Despite the high quality of the writing itself, its content was quite dark. It was a frightening story, leaving the reader imagining what it would be like to be in that position. Its lifelike descriptions left one shuddering at the grossness of the story. Creepily, it showed the reader some more detail about the Inquisition. With this in mind, I would say that "The Pit and the Pendulum" was worth reading because of its superb writing, but need not be read often due to its cruel and unusual subject matter.

Highly Recommended and read it with great imagination to get the full affect. I am a fan of Silent Hill format horror and having that style of imagery will enhance this story. In my opinion I felt bad for the prisoner and yet not realizing the horrors he commited made me wander if he was a murderer who deserve such torment. I can't wait to read more Edgar Allan Poe.

THIS SPINE-CHILLING STORY IS THE MOST SCARY BOOK I'V EVER READ AND ITS VERY CREATIVE BUT I WAS MOST FRIEGHTENED BY THIS BOOK. THE COVER THROWS YOU OFF THOUGH IT DOESNT LOOK AS SCARY BUT ONCE YOU READ YOU LEARN THAT YOU CANT JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER. AND EDGAR ALLEN POE IS AN OUTSTANDING AUTHOR.

Edgar Allan Poe has so many great books, and was definantly a gifted author. This book, though, was my favorite of them all. In enjoyed how the man wondered his cell, calculating each footstep, so as to find out what he was being held prisoner in. I also enjoyed the way the Pendulum was mysterious to both the character and the reader, at first. After he realized what it was he was frightened, and then it almost hypnotized him. This book has some great suspense, as well as amazing despcriptive naration.

If you' ve never read this story, don' t get this before the standard edition. Beside s being very difficult to read via Nook, I feel the "comic book" images take away from the powerful expierience this story offers first time readers. The narrative style delivers, very potently, all that is needed to be seen, heard and felt, easily making this story one of the most immersive tales ever written. The art work in this version is indeed worthy of Poe's vision, but I assure you, the chilling images these words are sure to paint in your mind will linger much longer !

Couldn't really read this on my Nook, but just looking at the models by Ray Harryhausen makes it a must for his fans.
