Children's Literature - Joan Elste
Pizza is one of the foods listed in the Benchmark series "What's Cooking" that could have been eliminated. There seem to be a number of foods in the series that could be replaced by healthier items such as soups, berries, and vegetables, none of which are represented. Cake, cookies, and ice cream are all desserts and could be in a separate series in themselves. For the age group targeted, pizza seems to be a less healthy choice than some other options might have been. Though the format is the same as others in the series, and is well done with interesting photographs and descriptions, it may be more suitable to emphasize wholesome foods and make them more attractive to young children, especially with the current focus on children's weight. A double page spread in the back of the book lists "Words to Know" and a description of each. The opposite page under "Find Out More" lists books and websites to further explore information about pizza and pizza recipes. Reviewer: Joan Elste
