A cumulative rhyme describes the choppy cheese, sloppy sausages, gloppy tomatoes, and floppy dough that are cooked into a pizza and enjoyed by dozens of mice.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Dianne Ochiltree
This "delicious" book is a title in the popular "Step-into-Reading" series that will delight beginning readers, from preschool to first grade. It's an updated version of the old nursery rhyme, "This is the House that Jack Built." With a familiar rhythm and catchy rhymes, Gelman tells the hilarious story of a creative pizza maker, his pizza pan full of gooey, chewy ingredients and a hoard of hungry neighborhood mice. Terry's bold, full color illustrations add a humorous flavor of their own. Enjoy!
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1 Set to the familiar rhythm and cumulative rhyme pattern of "This Is the House That Jack Built," this beginning reader describes the sloppy cheese, spicy sausages, gloppy sauce, and floppy dough that are cooked into a pizza and enjoyed by dozens of mice, much to the cook's great disappointment. However, in order to make the rhyme work, the pizza is cooked in a "tray" rather than a pan, and the sausages are described as "choppy." Also, some of the words are not easy for beginning readers. Still, children will be carried along by the rhythm and the lively, colorful, and somewhat exaggerated illustrations. Great book for classroom read aloud with interactive and repeating text.

I read this book every year with my pizza unit to my preschool classroom. I have used pictures to represent each part of the pizza or a pocket chart along with story and the kids can read the story by themself after reading it as a group. Funny, silly rhyming words make the story a tongue twister the kids like listening to and watching me as I say it. I enjoy this book so much that when the library couldn't get it in for me when I needed it I purchased it so I would always have it. The kids enjoy the story, pictures and the ending.

    Can't Get Enough!

I did a pizza unit for my pre-school classroom. I introduced 'Pizza Pat' after reading 'The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza' which is also a great book but it did not quiet capture their interest like 'Pizza Pat.' They liked 'Pizza Pat' so much that this was the book they wanted to read all the time during free choice time. They could 'Never Get Enough!'
