Overview

By producing an antibody that specifically targets a protein found only in men, Dr. Stephen Redding discovers a method for controlling the sex of an unborn baby. The scientific community heralds the “Redd-Y Select” discovery as Redding’s crowning achievement. But before the first kit hits the shelves, a simple cold virus joins with the Redd-Y Select agent and exchanges genetic information. The resulting mutant combines the highly contagious attributes of the common cold with Redd-Y Select’s predilection to attack uniquely male proteins. Men associated with Redding’s biogenetic corporation soon become stricken with a mysterious disease. The illness starts with flu-like symptoms, but rapidly progresses to uncontrollable seizures, hemorrhaging, and death. The contagion proves immune to standard treatment and kills over 99% of the males it infects.

The epidemic spreads rapidly, leaving millions dead in its wake. The few men who manage to survive are sterile, and women impregnated with male fetuses spontaneously miscarry. The first female President of the United States struggles to rebuild society and supplant chaos with order. The President enlists the assistance of Dr. Maria Vasquez, a brilliant immunologist, to discover a cure for the plague. Maria toils feverishly to find the elusive antidote before her husband, an astronaut in command of the International Space Station, returns to earth. The plague’s causative agent proves a worthy adversary, and Maria’s initial treatment attempts fail. When an accident aboard the International Space Station forces the crew home early, Maria races against the clock to produce a novel antiserum. If her remedy fails, her husband will suffer a horrifying death, and humanity will be forced to confront the unthinkable: extinction.
