An Amish girl, Esther feels like "one black bird against the sky" in her plain clothes. So when she's forced to attend public school she's terrified. Despite her father's objections, a young Amish girl secretly looks forward to attending public school where she makes a best friend and gains a new perspective on her family's way of life.

A childhood favorite that my daughter enjoyed

I read and reread this book as a child and just finished reading it with my 8 year old daughter. When we finished she asked if I could buy her her own copy so she can read it to her daughter when she grows up. Like the previous reviewer, I always enjoyed books that showed a different world than the one I was familiar with. I highly recommend it.

Read this several times as a child

I always liked stories where I was immersed in a world different from my own, and this was one of them. As a child I wished Esther would wear the fancy clothes, but I was so scared about what might happen if she did! I'm looking forward to sharing this book with my own daughter, and I expect she'll find Esther's world as fascinating as I did.
