Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
We often think of plains as depicted in the opening scenes of Little House on the Prairie, with little Laura Ingalls Wilder running through the wildflowers and no hills or mountains in sight. Plains are often flat pieces of land but they can also have small, rolling hills. They may cover only a few acres or millions of acres. There are three distinct types of plains. Floodplains form near rivers, coastal plains form along ocean shorelines, and inland plains are surrounded by land. Climate affects the kind of plant life that can grow on a plain. If the climate is cold, thick forests may grow. In hotter climates, short grasses may grow. Part of the series "Earthforms," this series teaches the reader about different land forms, using quick facts and lots of photographs. The inclusion of bold print in the text to identify terms that are defined in the glossary is helpful. An index, a glossary, and supplemental reading and Internet site pages make this a series worth looking at for older elementary collections and middle school classrooms with reluctant readers. Internet sites are reached by viewing Facthound.com, a database that has already researched the sites and classified them according to age appropriateness. The code needed for accessing this web site is given at the back of the book.
