Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leona Illig
This book, part of the "Kingfisher Young Knowledge" series, is a compilation of facts about our planet. Some of the many topics covered are the composition of the earth, volcanoes, mountains, deserts, forests, oceans, and the weather. The information is presented in a format similar to that of an elementary reference book or encyclopedia, with a paragraph of facts about each topic accompanied by an illustration or photograph. At the end of the book are some instructions for projects that children can do. Most of the projects are simple, but they will probably require an adult's help or supervision. This is not a book that a child will want to read straight through, since the information is presented in a didactic, yet somewhat haphazard manner, without much context. There are also some errors in fact (e.g., defining "tropical" as an area with "hot, dry weather" is misleading, to say the least) and some typographical errors (e.g., "half fill of the bottle" instead of "fill half of the bottle"). Reviewer: Leona Illig
