Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The front cover states that Venus has more than 1.600 known major volcanoes. Some erupted as recently as the 21st century. Venus has a hostile environment and it has no moon. A day on Venus is very long—equaling 117 Earth days. Venus has a thick atmosphere and its air pressure is 90 to 100 times greater than Earth’s. The atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide, which makes it toxic to human life. Venus presents the perfect greenhouse effect: heat from the sun passes through the clouds wrapping the planet and become trapped so the planet cannot cool down at night. Furthermore Venus has clouds of sulfuric acid and hurricane-force winds that create violent lightning storms. This planet was known by many civilizations and has been given various names—its current one is the only female name given to a planet. Venus has been the most visited planet in our solar system with probes from the Russians, Europeans and Americans. There is a cautionary note regarding greenhouses gases on one of the closing pages. The answer to the question posed at the beginning of the book follows the “True Statistics” section and even the back cover contains some interesting information. The book’s generous full color photographs and illustrations help easily explain the facts. The books in this “New True Books: Space” series about the planets and Earth’s moon offer an enticing format. The first page challenges readers to find out which of two statements is true. There is an arrow that contains the text: “Find the answers in this book.” To help young readers appreciate the format of more substantial books for older readers, this one contains a content spread that lists each chapter heading followed by an intriguing question. There are also references to the back matter containing true statistics, resources, important words, an index and a brief blurb about the author. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot; Ages 8 to 10.
