Gillian Engberg
Gr. 1-3. This All Aboard Reading title offers basic information on the solar system, including some mention of historical beliefs about the planets. .... But the title also makes most concepts easy to grasp through kid-friendly examples ("If Earth were the size of a pea, Jupiter would be the size of an orange"), aided by an attractive page design and Ortakales' cut-paper collages, which are reminiscent of David Wisniewski's work. Satisfying nonfiction for beginning readers.

Where did the word planet come from and what is a planet? The answers to these and many other questions will be found in this well-written reader. Mercury, like other planets, was named after a Roman god and even though it is closest to the sun, Venus is hotter. Why? The clouds on Venus keep the heat in. Major astronomers and their discoveries and the current controversy about designating Pluto as a planet are presented. Delightful, cut paper collages add a little extra to this excellent introduction to the planets. A Level 2 book in the "All Aboard Reading" series. 2000, Grosset & Dunlap, . Ages 6 to 8.
