Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The front and back covers of this entry in the "Board Buddies" series display delightful collage art created with origami and other found papers. The story is essentially a counting book where kids learn about gardening while counting from one to ten. It starts with one brown bunny digging in the soil to create a garden. He is joined by two more who are planting seeds. The numbers increase as watering, weeding and watching things grow take place. Finally the harvest (carrots are now poking their way out of the soil) requires eight bunnies and finally ten to eat all the treats. The numbers in the body of the book are only in text format. It is not until the final page that kids see the Arabic numerals and can count the carrots from 1 to 10. Better than most early counting books, this one actually has a story that imparts useful information with delightful illustrations to accompany it. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

PreS—This clever concept book combines the planting cycle with counting. One brown bunny digs the soil and then two brown bunnies plant seeds until there are "Ten brown bunnies, 'Time to Eat!'" At the end of the story, a page contains numerals with the corresponding number of carrots opposite them. The simple, colorful collages are eye-catching and appealing. Young children will enjoy this rabbit family and their gardening activities. This book is best used one-on-one.—Linda Staskus, Parma Regional Library, OH
Kirkus Reviews
From one to ten, a family of brown bunnies digs, plants, waters, weeds, tends, harvests and eats the carrots in their garden. Wallace's anthropomorphized collaged-paper bunnies are positioned, for the most part, against a bright blue sky in simple compositions, making it easy to count them as one by one they join the spreads. She provides other objects to count, adding interest for repeat readings: The clouds (on sunny days), garden tools, birds and insects, etc., all match the number of the bunnies in any spread. The verse text is a series of declarative sentences with a predictable pattern, all beginning by indicating the number of brown bunnies engaged in the activity at hand. Although the numerals do not appear within the primary narrative, a concluding page presents them, each next to the appropriate number of carrots. Terrific. (Board book. 1-3)

This well-executed counting book features a family of bunnies with simple, brown-paper faces and bright clothing, created using origami and other papers. “One brown bunny digs the soil,” but soon additional bunnies come to help with the gardening on subsequent spreads. Rain or sun, the bunnies work together, until “Nine brown bunnies make a treat.” Joined by a final little one, all 10 enjoy the meal they’ve created together. A warm and genuine gem. Ages 1–3. (Mar.)
