Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
Macro-photography reveals a very close look at the tiny details of a variety of plants. Zooming in and enlarging these plants achieves a microscopic look at these small things. A paper clip is shown next to the photo for comparison. A label that tells how much the zoom lens is enlarged is shown next to the other photos. A look into photosynthesis and cells is illustrated by photos of algae and one-celled animals. Stems, spores, conifers, and flowers are all explored using amazing facts and photos. Several brief chapters explain pollination and germination. Interesting facts about how plants defend themselves and photos of meat-eating plants are included. There is information about how animals and plants depend on each other and facts about the different types of fungus. Several pages at the close of the text contain photos with clues to see if the reader can identify the images from previous pages. The answers are printed upside-down. "Factoid" inserts throughout the text relate vital statistics concerning certain plants such as seaweed and moss. The text is part of the series, "Zoom! The Invisible World of..." and includes a glossary, index, and "Notes for Parents and Teachers." A lot of information and outstanding photos make this text a valuable tool in learning some complex scientific facts. It would be useful for parents, teachers, and children who are independent readers. Reviewer: Vicki Foote
