    Over-all, a great field guide!

I have the 1st edition of this book, 1994. I has served me well for studying and referencing at home as well as in the field.
It's about 5"x8"x1", has a very durable soft-side waterproof cover with round corners, and waterproof pages throughout. It still looks pretty new despite regular use for about 10 years.
The photos are clear, the descriptions explicit, very detailed, rarely ambiguous.
There are interesting historical facts about plant uses by indigenous and emigrant peoples and general folklore about the plants sprinkled here and there as well, making it a less dry read than some reference books.

    Highly Recommend!

This guide, while by no means comprehensive, vividly describes many of the species common to the Pacific Northwest Coast. The combination of color photography and line drawings make this book ideal for those looking for an easy-to-use guide to common plants of this region. The pages and binding are durable- perfect for use outdoors. As a forestry instructor in Oregon, this is one of the required texts for students in both my dendrology and plant identification classes. Although I sometimes wish the dichotomous keys were more detailed and technical, my students appreciate the fact that the book is written in a language easy for the lay person to understand. They also really enjoy the notes section on each species. Details such as historical uses of a species and other unique items of interest often help to make these plants more memorable for my students. Jim Pojar and Andy MacKinnon have done an excellent job compiling a non-technical field guide that can be enjoyed by naturalists interested in becoming acquainted with Pacific Northwest plants.
