Reviewer: Jeffrey S. Rosenthal, MD (Bridgeport Hospital)
Description: The authors provide a sensitive, thoughtful, quite informative, and constructive book on cosmetic and reconstructive aspects of breast surgery. They have managed to effectively excise the esoteric minutiae often found in other books in this area, allowing readers to easily garner the key elements necessary for breast evaluation and operative procedures.
Purpose: The aspirations of this book are to provide young plastic surgeons with valuable insights from the authors' experience and a practical introduction to the core of breast surgery techniques. These simple yet difficult to attain objectives have been admirably achieved.
Audience: Although the preface indicates the book is intended for young plastic surgeons, it would benefit both those with more experience and those neophyte residents who are still stumbling along their chosen paths.
Features: Readers are treated to color anatomical illustrations of superb quality, clear before and after photographs, and plentiful intraoperative views that help foster an understanding of the technique. Although this is a second edition following a 10-year hiatus, the authors note that it is similar to its prior edition only in style and desire to be precise and detailed. Otherwise, it has been totally revised and expanded. Commencing with the basic anatomy of the breast and chest, subsequent chapters cover breast implants, choices of appropriate breast prostheses, and the various surgical approaches used for the placement of these implants. Chapters on reshaping of breasts via lifting and/or reduction lead into chapters on breast reconstruction. A good portion of the book is dedicated to reconstructive surgery after mastectomy. Various flaps are reviewed. The timing options and significance of immediate versus delayed breast reconstruction are also discussed. Final chapters mull over the various surgical methods of breast removal in order to conserve breast tissue to afford a more natural reconstruction. Issues are thoughtfully addressed and the book is easy to read and to the point. If there is any shortcoming, it might be the lack of references, although that is a conscious decision of the authors who present a manual of techniques.
Assessment: While it is true that there are many books that profess to teach practical and useful breast surgical techniques, most are full of verbiage that distracts but does not educate. In contrast, this book offers readers the opportunity to learn about techniques to attain optimal outcomes. The authors are to be commended for their efforts.
