Description: Revealing the mystery of platelets — this is an excellent guide to the physiology and pathology of platelets. There are detailed chapters with information on platelet testing and on drugs that are used to alter platelet function. The book ends with descriptions of several diseases, the role platelets play in them, and the treatment options.
Purpose: There is increasing evidence that platelets play major roles in thrombotic disorders such as stroke, peripheral vascular disease, and myocardial infarction; platelets also are implicated in cancer and infection. Disorders of platelets or alteration in their number cause significant morbidity, but the pathophysiology of platelets is largely a mystery to clinicians. Understanding this cytoplasmic fragment can lead to great improvements in the care and prevention of disease.
Audience: This book is meant for researchers or clinicians who work with platelets or their related diseases. Cardiologists, neurologists, vascular surgeons, and hematologists will have a special interest in this book, although general practitioners who touch upon these areas may also use it.
Features: The book begins with a detailed look at the physiology of platelets. By taking each component and examining it completely, the full spectrum of platelet function can be ascertained.
