PreS-Gr 2--Using a folk-art style, Paschkis follows a child through the day as the youngster's ordinary world is enlivened by imagination. Moments of everyday life--playing outside, taking a bath--become fanciful adventures with the turn of a page. For example, in one spread the mother and child share a pasta meal. This scenario is followed by a two-page spread that shows the child, now miniaturized, walking a spaghetti tightrope in a circus under the table. Unlike the more contained pasta-eating scene, this spread is filled with color and pattern from edge to edge. While Paschkis is creative, her rhyming text does not rise above the banal. Also, the colors in the gouache paintings appear dulled and faded. The colors seem inharmonious; they clash but have no life or spirit. A charming cat weaves its way through both the real and imaginary scenes. One moment it sits at the foot of the table, and in the next it is a regal lion with a spaghetti mane. Still, this is not enough to counter the book's shortcomings.--Judith Gloyer, Milwaukee Public Library
Kirkus Reviews
Play All Day ( Apr.; 32 pp.; 0-316-69043-0): A bedtime book alternates vignettes of a boy at play with double- page, full-bleed spreads of his far more imaginative version of events. First he is shown in a world all his own; he begins playing outside when the wind blows his hat to a tree branch. Suddenly he is on a red mare, charging to the tree, which holds a number of hats: "Did a wind wizard toss it on a branch that was bare?" The conceit isn't entirely original but Paschkis (So Happy/So Sad, 1995) provides charming scenes of domesticity that often outpace the fantasy spreads. (Picture book. 2-5)
