Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
This is a collection of multicultural photographs of children and families at play. It includes images of kids on bikes, at the beach, flying a kite, dancing and playing games. The multicultural component is so important, that each of the 29 images is indexed to detail where the image was taken and some insight into the photograph is noted. A world map highlights where the countries of origin are for the various photographs. Most of the images are strong enough to convey a real sense of fun and camaraderie.
School Library Journal
PreS-KTwo more additions to the author's series of photographic essays, this time focusing on the concepts of play and work. The format remains the samea two-page spread with bright, colorful pictures that illustrate the examples suggested in the spare text. The language is clear and straightforward, and, for the most part, the photographs support the texts well. A section at the back of each book identifies the country in which each photo was taken and includes a brief explanation of the activity portrayed. This spread is confusingly labeled "index" when in fact the entries are in page order. No African countries are used to illustrate Play (13 of the pictures are from the United States) and no South American country appears in Work although the Central American countries of Mexico and Panama are represented. Miller has produced a number of photo-essays that touch on aspects of both work and play that are also geared to preschoolers. Still, collections serving young children will want to add these two titles.Linda Greengrass, Bank Street College Library, New York City
