Gr 5 Up-This title follows a design similar to that of Play Ball Like the Pros (Peachtree, 2002). Krasner assembles an impressive group of subjects, from Johnny Bench and Gary Carter on catching, to Don Sutton, Phil Niekro, and Tom Seaver on aspects of pitching. Both offense and defense are covered: George Brett discusses clutch hitting and Rod Carew addresses baserunning techniques, while Golden Glove shortstops Ozzie Smith and Carl Yastrzemski discuss fielding. In addition, each entry includes anecdotes, a glossary of key terms, and mention of how the advice can be put into action. Black-and-white photos and line drawings appear throughout the succinct and readable interviews, and the perspectives are both detailed and insightful. For example, Whitey Ford still maintains that Jackie Robinson should have been called out when he stole home against Ford in the 1955 World Series. Both fans and players will find much to enjoy in this well-crafted collection.-Marilyn Taniguchi, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
