Overview

A kitten, being picked up from preschool by his parent, asks, “What will we play today? Let’s play a ballgame!” This book with sturdy cardstock pages and clever die-cuts is made for active youngsters who long to play grown-up games. Though they are too young to actually play baseball, soccer, basketball or football, they are never too young to pretend. The child is asked to guess each game, using the type of ball and the playing field as clues. Then, as the page turns, a die-cut ball appears to move from one page to the next. The little kitten is shown as a member of a winning team with every piece of that game’s uniform and equipment pictured. This adorable book ends on the realistic note of playing catch.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Denise Daley
Young readers can see clever illustrations of an animal character preparing to play popular ball games. The animal asks the reader to guess the game and with a turn of the page, more animals are seen playing the sport. The creatively cut pages use a portion of the previous page to provide a full picture for the following page. Young readers will enjoy the unusual style of the book just as much as they take pleasure in practicing reading and learning about sports. Simple key words are used repeatedly, and corresponding pictures are provided to help beginning readers identify common words. Simple sports terminology is used and a variety of popular sports such as soccer, basketball, baseball, and football are included. Young children will like this book, and adults will like sharing it with them.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-Children are invited to guess what game is featured from an illustration showing a kitten holding a ball and standing on an outdoor playing field. Turning the die-cut pages reveals the answer along with a picture inventory of related athletic gear: "This is my soccer shirt," "These are my basketball shorts," "These are my baseball socks." All of the items can be found in the brightly colored cartoon art. A positive statement, such as "And this is me scoring a touchdown!," frames each of the five action scenes. The book ends with the teammates playing a friendly game of catch. Reproducible paper-doll patterns extend the interactive fun. A winning title for young sports enthusiasts.-Linda Ludke, London Public Library, Ontario, Canada Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
