Play by Play: 25 Years of Royals on Radioby Denny Matthews, Matt Fulks, Fred White
For more than 75 years, Major League Baseball radio announcers have carved a place in America's heart by forming a bond between the listeners, themselves, and the teams they represent. Between 1973 and 1998, Kansas City Royals listeners invited Denny Matthews and Fred White into their homes. During the 1998 season, which marked their 25th and final season together, they were the longest-running broadcast duo in the American League and tied for the second-longest in all of baseball.
Pull up a chair and swap stories with Matthews and White about the battles in the 1970s with the Oakland A's and New York Yankees, or the 1985 World Championship. Listen as they speak candidly about their relationship with former managers such as Whitey Herzog and Dick Howser, and former players like Amos Otis and George Brett. Along the way they even dish up their All-Time Royals team and offer thoughts on the current structure of Major League Baseball. Get their take on former owner Ewing Kauffman, as well as Fred's parting comments, as his tenure with the Royals comes to a close.
Radio is a wonderful medium and a wonderful art. Frank Lloyd Wright once said, "Television is chewing gum for the eyes." If that is true, then radio must be chewing gum for the mind...for the imagination, with good announcers providing the flavor. For fans of the Kansas City Royals, Denny Matthew and Fred White have been those announcers. Have a listen.
