Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Frasier (Sleep Tight, etc.) has perfected the art of making a reader's skin crawl, which is evident from this book's very first scene, in which a medical examiner discovers in the midst of an autopsy that the cadaver he's working on is really a live person. Set in Savannah, Ga., this exceptional thriller follows the hunt for the deranged person who's drugging people so that their minds remain wide awake even as their bodies resemble death. The creepiness factor increases when Frasier introduces homicide detective Elise Sandburg, who was abandoned in a cemetery as a baby and who knows Gullah spells and culture. Elise's partner, anti-social David Gould, is equally strange; his past holds secrets so dark he should be under psychiatric care. Formerly with the FBI, Gould currently lives in a rundown, foul-smelling apartment and sleeps with a prostitute who works for a voodoo priestess. As the two detectives follow leads to the priestess and the former college professor who researched the drug, they forge a tentative bond and come to terms with their own troubled pasts. Frasier's characters are not only fully realized, but fascinating to boot, and she evokes the dark, mystical side of Savannah with precision and skill. Appropriately, this unsettling tale closes with a grim children's rhyme and a spell for "Elise's Follow-Me-Boy Mojo." Agent, Steve Axelrod. (June) Forecast: With cover praise from Lisa Gardner and Jayne Ann Krentz, this book should have no trouble reaching its target readership. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Play Dead is a fast-paced, thrill-filled read that will keep you turning pages faster than your brain can keep up. The characters are both chilling and real. I became fascinated with the reality of the protagonists and how quickly I sympathized with their plights, both career and personal. The twists, which are so important to this genre, are well-measured and believable. The story is strong, the themes developed. Overall, the novel appears seamless. Strong with story and character, Play Dead is never a dull read. I will certainly be lining my shelves with more from Anne Frasier.

I couldn't put this book down. It had me on the edge of my seat throughout the whole book. It had a suprise ending and the killer was someone you didn't expect one bit. I would reccomend this book to anyone who likes reading murder mysteries and watching CSI and Law and Order. Over all great book.

I was introduced to Ms. Frasier's work not long ago, and I cannot get enough of her. This did not disappoint. It is a fast-paced thriller with so many twists that your head will be spinning like Linda Blair. Mix a little murder with a little voodoo and you've got yourself a super suspenseful read. Ms. Frasier can get just a tad gruesome with her details, so if that kind of stuff bothers you, this is probably not the book for you. If, however, you are like me and devour good murder mysteries, you cannot go wrong with this one. The voodoo aspect puts just enough edge on the plot to make it one you might want to read with the lights on!! It is my understanding that there will be a sequel to this book. Cannot wait for it! Hope it comes soon. Thanx to Ms. Frasier for an outstanding read! You had me from the beginning and never let go!! -- SPeeD

I'm really glad I impulse-bought this book. A great narrative voice drives the story of two likeable but flawed detectives as they seek a killer in the dark underbelly of Savannah. The pages flew by. Recommended!

This was a little difficult for me to follow at first because it jumped around a lot, but once I got into it I couldn't put it down! It gets more fast-paced as the book goes on, and takes some turns that even I didn't see coming.
