Mike Lupica presents the second book in his NEW YORK TIMES bestselling Game Changers series!

Still living large off their incredible football championship win just weeks before, Ben McBain and his crew must now prepare for basketball season. Ben is known as the best point guard throughout the league. And now that Shawn O'Brien has joined their team, they are a shoo-in to win it all. But there is a new kid in town, Chase Braggs, a point guard like Ben who seems to be better, stronger, and faster. Refusing to let his team down, Ben hits the courts hard to practice. Ben's rivalry with Chase seems to take the fun out of playing ball with his best friends. Will Ben be able to pull it together for his team and for himself?

Kirkus Reviews
Ben McBain and his friends are still celebrating their incredible football championship season (Game Changers, 2012) when the time arrives to prepare for basketball. As always, Ben is the heart and soul of his team and looks forward to maintaining their athletic success. A preseason scrimmage with a rival team introduces a new challenge: Chase Braggs, a talented player with an attitude that seems from the beginning to be directed at Ben. Before he realizes it, Ben has let Chase get under his skin and turned from his love of excellence for its own sake to proving he can outdo the brash newcomer. Ben's relentless pursuit of victory results in a serious injury to his friend Sam that will be a tough blow to their team. As if that isn't enough, Chase seems to be making inroads in a friendship with Lily, someone who has always been an important presence in Ben's otherwise sports-dominated life. Like the first in the series, this volume provides an action-packed look at middle school sports as it explores issues of friendship, problem solving and coming-of-age. Once again, the adults provide guidance in supportive roles, but the kid characters, especially Ben, demonstrate the ability of younger teens to learn from their experiences. A reconciliation between Ben and Chase doesn't quite ring true, but this is a slight quibble in an otherwise satisfying read. Sports fans will eat it up. (Fiction. 8-12)

About the book: Ben McBain and his friends are still living large off their incredible football season. But almost immediately, it’s time to play basketball. The guys must move on. Ben is considered the best point guard in the league, and now that Shawn O’Brien has joined their team, they are a shoo-in to win it all. Chase Braggs is the new kid in town. He’s a point guard, like Ben. He’s fast, strong, and determined to win, like Ben. But Chase likes to talk on the court and show off. Definitely NOT like Ben. Refusing to let his team down, Ben hits the courts hard to practice. But Ben’s revilary with Chase seems to take the fun out of playing ball with his best friends. Can Ben become a better play maker out on the court without losing his love of the game? (inside book cover) Review: Game Changers is aimed at the middle school reader. This book was easy read and somewhat predictable in its ending. It is the second book in a sports series by Mike Lupica. The book deals with rivalry between schools and their sports and trying to show good sportsmanship. The author does a good job of dealing with the topic of sportsmanship and I believe any young person interested in sports will thoroughly enjoy this book. I like the way he brought the main character to the point of realizing that he needed to be a team player and not the superstar. This book is very suspenseful because when a chapter ended there was always something big that happened that made me want to read on. One example is at the end of one chapter Sam and Ben were at the park playing a little one on one. It was getting dark but they still kept playing one play when Sam drove hard to the basket he didn’t see the hole in the ground. And ended up having to go to the hospital. Also There was a new kid they called him MJ he wasn’t really good he couldn’t shoot, all he could do is play defence but when they were losing they passed MJ the ball he shot it for the win Ben couldn’t believe he passed MJ the ball with the game on the line.
