Overview

Famous in the 1930s, there is little on CD of Pasquele Troise & His Mandoliers, with vocalist Don Carlos (who was Irish). Luckily for fans of gypsy-inspired folk music, Sanctuary Records released a 25-song compilation of some of his pieces, including "Dark Eyes," "Gipsy Moon," "La Paloma," "A Café in Vienna" and Enrico Toselli's "Serenata." It's music that reminds you of black-and-white films and old cobblestone roads, and though the sound quality is not that of modern recording (there's that lovely tinny sound to the album), Play to Me, Gypsy is a great compilation and a taste of one of the forgotten musicians of the 20th century.
