Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverley Fahey
Lively rhyming verse explores all the ways that animal families frolic and play. Kittens pounce and wrestle, puffins surf the waves, polar bears slip and slide on the ice, dolphins blow bubbles deep in the sea, elephants squirt each other with mud, kangaroos jump and twist, and monkeys swing from trees. What about human families? They stretch and yawn to begin a new day, build castles in the sand, bake together, and build a doghouse. Soft-hued watercolors capture all the fun, flight, and fancy of the animals as well as the warmth of the human family's sharing. Each animal group is identified within the illustration that will help small children learn new animals. The cadence of the rhymes makes this a perfect read aloud for the very young. An added "Play Tips" is aimed at parents and gives concrete advice for creative ways to extend a child's play. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey

PreS-Gr 1

Adult and baby animals, including humans, are shown playing in this simple yet effective book. Each page contains a phrase, e.g., "Roll in the mud, splash and squirt" (for the elephants) or "We'll roll and tumble on the ground" (for the wombats), and a sweet, realistic illustration of the action. Small, unobtrusive text on the pictures identifies the animal and its young, for example, "ravens and juveniles." The last page has seven "Play Tips." A fun-to-read rhyming text and engaging watercolor and colored pencil illustrations work together to make this a fine book for sharing one-on-one or with a small group.-Catherine Callegari, Gay-Kimball Library, Troy, NH

Kirkus Reviews
Five scenes of children and parents at play interspersed among images of frolicking animal families create a gentle celebration of intergenerational fun. Diversity is found in the multiracial cast of human characters, the different kinds of animals and their varied activities. The text's rhyming cadence borders on cloying at times, but it is nicely supplemented by text labeling the featured animals: "Blow some bubbles in the deep blue sea. / Snap up a fish and toss it to me," reads the double-page spread featuring a "dolphin and calf" (distressingly depicted blowing bubbles out of their mouths, not their blowholes) and a "sea lion and pup." This child-friendly text is complemented by backmatter aimed at adults, with advice about the importance of play in children's lives and connections to play in the animal kingdom. Downing's watercolor illustrations employ a muted palette and use rounded forms that often emphasize physical closeness between characters. While there is nothing to mark this as an outstanding title, it is a welcome affirmation of play and connection in young children's lives. (Picture book. 2-5)
