Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

The star of several picture books, Rainbow Fish is back in his first pop-up book, with the sparkling protagonist meeting some other aquatic creatures. The interactive elements add layering and a sense of movement as Rainbow navigates the underwater world: "Who is hiding behind those leaves? Six small seahorses!" On another spread, a blue whale tail flops up and down as the discombobulated fish "go tumbling on the Big Whale Ride!" The special effects enhance the familiar, gentle illustrations. Ages 3-up. Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
The fish are playing hide-and-seek with Rainbow Fish, and the reader is invited to locate the sea creatures. There are six seahorses that appear from behind leaves as the reader turns the page and opens the book wide. The tail of the whale flips up, and a little fish comes out from behind some plants. This is not so much a story as it is a venue for showing off the six double-page spreads of fascinating and creative pop-ups. Fans of the "Rainbow Fish" books will recognize his friends because of their iridescent scales. The soft blues and greens of the sea setting are soothing. The whale's tail and the appearance of red coral add excitement to those pages. The heavy paper used in this "deluxe pop-up book" is sturdy, but with any book of this type, care must be taken to keep the actual moving parts from tearing. Rainbow Fish fans, in particular, will most appreciate this book. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo
