Children's LiteratureAGERANGE: Ages 4 to 7.
Penguin children rush to greet each other at the beginning of the day. They have a great time in the snow. They skim; they slip; they squeak. At lunch time they jump into the sea where they swirl and whirl and twirl. Then they discover a sobbing baby seal on an ice floe. The penguins put on an acrobatic show to entertain the pup until its mama returns. She thanks them for their help and the sleepy penguins head for home "waddling and yawning through the ice and snow." Families gather in happy huddles, because what penguins like best is a cozy cuddle. The text, written in verse, is part of the artistic design appearing in circles and waves as it accompanies the energetic penguins in their play. The penguins are depicted with varying personalities, appearing in combinations of colors (white, black, and gray). Some wear colorful neck scarves or knitted hats. A good read aloud choice.
