She stood in front of her elegant friend in her dark blue polyester smock, ill-fitting jeans and faded-out, oversized shirt. Worse, her own frizzy blond hair was in bad need of a trim and deep conditioning. Neither of which she could afford at the moment.
"I'm sorry about your mom," Margaret said quietly. "Had I known, I would have been here for the funeral."
Allison patted her arm as her throat tightened. She'd loved her mother more than anything. Ten years ago when she and Maggie had graduated high school, Maggie had gone to the University of Georgia, then moved off to New York after graduation to be an editor. Meanwhile, Allison had stayed home to help her mother, who was dying of cancer. For nine years her mother had fought hard and then last spring, she'd lost the war.
God, how she missed her. It was still a raw, aching pain inside her. Her mother had been everything to her.
"I know," she said, rubbing Maggie's arm. "I'm sorry. I didn't even think about sending word to you until after the funeral was over. I just wasn't in my right mind."
Maggie nodded in understanding. "You've been busy. My mom told me that you're engaged to Gary Mitchell. Congrats. I know how much you always loved him."
Allison drew a shaky breath as she thought about her rattlesnake ex. "Yeah," she said in an overly exaggerated tone. "Just l-o-v-e him to pieces."
"Uh-oh. That sounds ominous."
She sighed as she picked up the broom. "Well, I found the dog in bed a week ago with one of the strippers from the Night Owl."
Maggie's face showed the horror Allison had felt when she'd stumbled in late from work to find the two of them going at it in her bed. "No!"
"Oh yeah."
"What did you do?"
"I grabbed my broom, swept both pieces of trash out of my house, then I went through and decided it was time to do a little fall cleaning. Maggie laughed. "What did Gary do?"

He didn't buy it for a minute.
Allison led Maggie away from his hearing. "Sorry, Maggie, I can't really talk right now."
Nodding, Maggie let her gaze dip down to the pocket of Allison's smock where the top of her book was peeking out. She smiled. "Sugar and Spice by Rachel Fire. You like it?"
"I love it. It's a great book."
Maggie's smile widened. "I edited it."
"You did not!"
"Yes, I did. She's one of the authors I discovered last year." Maggie tilted her head and looked back down the aisle to where Dan was still watching them. "Look, I don't want to get you into trouble. What time do you get off work?"
"Midnight."
"Okay, I'll be waiting out in the front lot with a pizza, a pack of Ho Hos and beer. Sound good?"
Allison laughed. When Maggie had been a college student, they would always celebrate her homecomings with pizza, Ho Hos and beer. A disgusting and yet somehow quite tasty salute.
"Sounds great. I'll see you in three hours."
Maggie stepped away from Allison, and headed straight toward the middle-aged floor manager who had been eyeballing them with tangible rancor.
"That's a great employee you have there," Maggie said to him. "She really knows the store."
He gave her a semi-hostile glare and walked off, leaving her with the childish desire to stick her tongue out at the soured beast.
But that would wait.
Pulling her phone out of her pocket, Maggie turned to see Allison straightening shelves.
She checked her wristwatch.
It was right at nine o'clock, and she knew exactly where her boss would be. Where he always was...sitting at his desk, working late into the night.
Z answered his cell phone on the third ring.
"Hey, Mr. Z, shouldn't you be at home?" It was an old joke between them. In truth, she was just as bad to work late as he was. But then she loved her job as an editor and as the head contest coordinator, and as a result, she had a hard time leaving her work behind at the end of the day.
"And why are you calling me at nine o'clock when you're supposed to be on vacation?" he asked in that deep sexy/provocative voice that always made her shiver.
But not nearly as much as the breathtaking man who held it. At six foot four, with a lean, rippling body that had been built for sweaty, exhausting sex, Wulfgar Zimmerman was one of the sexiest men who had ever been born.

Love Sherrilyn's book's I bought a nook because it is suppose to be cheaper and more environmetally friendly but I will not buy a digital version when paper back is cheaper, so I guess I wont be buying this book. What is the deal?? Very disappointed.

I bought this book to get to the story of Nikolai and Myst as I am a huge fan of the Immortals after Dark series. This was not worth the price tag and the story of Nikolai and Myst did not have a lot more info than what I got from the rest of the series. The other 2 short stories were fluff at best.

This anthology of three erotic romance tales brings together some of the most well-known names in romance -- Sherrilyn Kenyon, author of paranormal 'Dark Hunter' series 'among others' Jaid Black, founder of popular 'Ellora's Cave Publishing' and Kresley Cole, who made her debut into the supernatural with the first installment of 'Immortals After Dark'.'Playing Easy to Get' opens with a fun, if slightly convoluted, entry into Sherrilyn Kenyon's wickedly-acronymed 'BAD' 'Bureau of American Defense' series. Novellas are always tricky for me to review -- and Kenyon does manage to pack a lot into less than a hundred pages 'especially in regard to her hero', but the characters' evolution on the whole and the evolution of their relationship is so fast that I had trouble swallowing it. I'm all for reading about realistic, no-strings-attached physical intimacy -- and I think it makes for more believable dimensions in fiction -- but there was very little bridge from sex to 'true love'. Vince Cappelletti is ex-mafia-turned-good-guy who gets signed up to work undercover as security on what amounts to be Fantasy Island. Allison George is lucky Georgia girl who wins a trip to said Fantasy Island. Needless to say, things go to hell in a handbasket quickly when Vince's past catches up to him, and Allison ends up caught in the crossfire. The two end up on the run, and romance grows. Not too bad, overall, and entertaining to take up an hour or so -- Kenyon's usual romp of violence and hotness. 6.5/10 I'm usually not a fan of Nordic settings, but Black offers enough twists on the usual tales to keep her offering fresh. Sofia Rowley, after losing her brother and with him the last member of her family, is taken captive by neo-Viking warriors and auctioned off at the block. As she soon learns, she is no slave, but rather the bride of a warrior whose nearly-instant love for her starts to warm even her own frozen heart. As mentioned already, this novella has a neat concept, and in a longer length and with a bit more fleshing out, it wouldn't be too bad. It has a little too much of a male-centric feel, though certainly not misogynistic, and the development between characters happens far, far too easily. Take a read if you're already buying the anthology. 5.5/10 The longest, last, and by-and-far best tale in the book is penned by then-newcomer to the paranormal scene, Kresley Cole. 'Immortals After Dark' was not yet one of the best-selling series on the market, but this is without a doubt still worthy of the same accolades.Cole introduces -- and does a remarkable job of -- creating an entire paranormal realm in under two-hundred pages, while fleshing out a believable, hot romance. Varying factions within the 'Lore' -- the supernatural side of our world -- are battling for power, even amongst their own species. Nikolai Wroth, soldier in a 'good guys' vampire army bent on destroying the killers of their kind, stumbles across a conundrum of a female who just might be his predestined mate. Unfortunately for him, Myst, a Valkyrie and immortal warrior, has other plans for the vampires she finds, and it takes all of Wroth's resources and strength to even keep her around long enough to seduce. I loved this story, and while all of Cole's following books are good, this little tale which introduces it all is one of the best nuggets in the series. Whether or not you liked the full-length novels, this is an exercise in 'how, properly, to write romance' -- not to mention 'how, properly, to write erotica'. The tale's hot as hell 'with all puns intended', with hints at D/s and fiery power-play -- this is not to be missed. 8.8/10

I hadn't had the chance to read it because I had so many other books I wanted to read plus I was in the midst of getting my blog off the ground. Recently I have been so consumed with trying to read all the books I had been given by some amazing authors that I haven't had time to stop and smell the roses so to speak. I had just finished reading an e-book for review on my PC, when out of the corner of my eye I spied Playing Easy To Get. I was tired of having to read e-books on my PC (my awesome e-reader is broken so I am stuck reading my e-books on my PC) and I just wanted to be able to hold a book in my hand and leave my room at the same time. That's when I thought I would take a teeny tiny break from my author requested reads and just read for the pure pleasure of it. Don't get me wrong I love the books I am asked to review but sometimes you just need a "for me" book. I am so glad I did because this book was AWESOME. I was able to sample three authors in one book. I have like 2 books from Sherrilyn Kenyon but haven't read them and I have never read anything by Jaid Black or Kresley Cole. This book, in my opinion, was a great introduction to their writing styles. Each novella gives you a glimpse into 3 amazing series, which I have in turn add to my to be read pile. You have Kresley Cole's Immortal's After Dark Series #1, Sherrilyn Kenyon's B.A.D. Series #1.5, and Jaid Black's Vikings Underground Series #3.
Sherrilyn Kenyon has her heroine into a particular romance novel and debating on whether to enter a dream of a lifetime sweepstakes while her hero is on the run from some shady guys hiding out and trying to maintain a low profile. Jaid Black has her heroine grieving the loss of her brother and bemoaning her lonely life while her hero is an old school Viking who lives underground and follows some very ancient teachings of his people. Kresley Cole has her heroine as a very scheming Valkyrie who will stop at nothing to punish any man who is deserving while her hero is a 300 or so year old Vampire who was made because he was a warrior but not really accepted because he was not born into the supernatural world.
Each story has something for everyone and the hot hook-ups are a nice added touch. The work with the story and are not just added to fill up space. On a scale from 1-10 I give Playing Hard To Get a great BIG 10. If you enjoy a good with characters you can enjoy and possible relate to then Playing Easy To Get is the book for you. Everyone 18+ should pick up a copy and enjoy where the stories take them.

This is a very old (well, it's been out since 2006) anthology but for Ms. Cole's part, is the prequel to the Immortals After Dark series that is extremely popular. I have held out and have not read any of the series waiting to get this book which I was able to get from my library after an extremely long wait. It was worth it. The story, "The Warlord Wants Forever" was so freaken good, I just cannot wait to read the next in the series. I am running to my shelf to start the next book (I had already purchased it quite some time ago). I love the world Ms. Cole created and the characters and for the first time in a long time, one of the erotic scenes in the book made my blood burn! Very hot stuff. For some reason, and maybe this is just me, but for some reason, this book sort of reminded me of a sexy Vampire Academy.
The middle story Hunter's Oath by Jaid Black was interesting as well. I will definitely be checking out other books by Ms. Black too! The story was rather unusual in that a world was set with underground Viking mega hot dudes that kidnap women from the above ground but the kidnapped women love it etc. Our heroine was kidnapped after her brother dies and she goes to Alaska. It's a good story. I enjoyed it tremendously.
Then finally, the first story, Turn up the Heat by Sherrilyn Kenyon was um, well, really bad. I hate saying that too because Sherrilyn is one of my favorite authors. This story is a B.A.D. novella and frankly, I seriously doubt I'll be reading any of the others. It was a contemporary romance and the romance part was um, BAD.
So the star of this anthology is Kresley Cole's book which thankfully is SO good, you won't mind the bad Sherrilyn Kenyon that has top billing. Ms. Black's story is a lovely little tidbit as well so all in all, it's an anthology that you should read if for nothing else, but to get the beginning of the Immortals After Dark series.
What I liked: I loved, loved, loved the world that was in The Warlord Wants Forever. It was so exciting and dark and sexy. It's such a great start to a series and as bait to get new readers, it's perfect.
What I disliked: I just have to point to Ms. Kenyon's story. It was just baaaaaaaadddd.

kresley cole, i thank god for you every day!!! sometimes twice a day. you are the greatest writer of all time and please don't stop, are i will have to start cleaning and cooking again... the storiest only get better and better and when i pick ur book up i can't put it down till it's done. mrs. lynn

Sherrilyn Kenyon's characters are very well written and would make any woman want to 'play easy to get' by her B.A.D. Men. The entire B.A.D. Series is a must read. What more can I say. LOVED THEM!

I disagree w-dez, I liked Sherrilyn Kenyons 'Turn up the Heat' & loved Kresley Cole 'Warlord Wants Forever' but was less than thrilled w-Jaid Black's story 'Hunters Oath'. I kept thinking that it could have been a little different. From all the possiblities such as dating clubs & bride books from russia, there were endless possible reasons to use as part of the plot& explainations to give for getting the women. however, the reason she was kidnapped left me...cold. I liked the set up4the other 2books. I picked this up because it had2 writers whose style was familiar to me

Even though I love Sherrilyn Kenyon's books, I found 'Turn up the Heat' to be quite lacking. But the other stories were absoulutely great. I will definitely clear a space on my bookshelf for Kresly Cole and Jaid Black!!!

I found the first story 'Turn Up the Heat' by Sherrilyn Kenyon not to my liking so have given the 4 star rating. But the other two stories by Jaid Black and Kresley Cole worth reading. 'Hunters Oath' by Jaid Black was a nice romance that entwined love and lust nicely. Now the 'Warlord Wants Forever'....at first I was frustrated by this one and was going to put it down ultimately going to say that Jaid Black was the only one that was worth the read....However, I decided to finish the story saying to myself that I didn't give it a chance therefore not being able to give an accurate opinion of the story, I was pleasantly surprised that this one became my favorite story out of this novella, it was very good for a short story I just wished that the story could have been made into a full length novel. WOW! It was very good so much in fact I am going to try reading a full novel from this author.
