Overview

Playing for Change is producer Mark Johnson's multimedia project intending to tie the world together via music. Johnson traveled the globe between 2004 and 2008, finding musicians in every corner of the world, from African villages to the streets of Santa Monica, then recorded them, usually singing American rock and pop classics, for this 2009 charity album. Many of the ten songs here are quite familiar -- Ben E. King's "Stand by Me," Peter Gabriel's "Biko," Tracy Chapman's "Talkin' Bout a Revolution," U2's "Love Rescue Me," Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come," and Bob Marley's "One Love" and "No More Trouble" -- and even if the arrangements aren't necessarily faithful, they are familiar, blending in elements of blues, gospel, folk, reggae, and African music that's eclectic but not exotic. That familiarity isn't just due to the heavy presence of blues singer Keb' Mo' -- who sings on three tracks here -- and Bono's cameo, but also how Johnson's discovery Roger Ridley is essentially a soul singer in the vein of Ted Hawkins and how all the material, even Pierre Minetti's written-to-order "Don't Worry," is presented in the form of Western pop music. This does help give Playing for Change a broad potential audience, one that might find itself introduced to new rhythms, harmonies, and textures thanks to this good-hearted project. [The Deluxe Edition features an expanded documentary on the DVD.]

Technically, conceptually, and philosophically beautiful! Set consists of an audio CD with 10 songs and a DVD with 5 of these songs sung by multiple musicians from around the world performing in their home environments intercut to appear as though they are listening to one another and performing together in real time. People gravitated to the TV screen when I played it in a semi-public area - one person bought a copy on the spot! A remarkable product, the purchase of which funds music schools around the world. Appropriate for any age. Recommend with enthusiasm and without reservations.

Hearing "Playing for Change" will inspire any listener to believe that music can truly unite the planet! I was so taken with this CD that I bought many copies to share with friends and to spread the word! Congratulations to the producers and all the amazing musicians that contributed to making this beautiful gem!

I received this music as a gift from my daughter after hearing it at a relatives house. The DVD portion is fantastic and the music is so uplifting. We have gifted this music to several people because it is so good and we knew they would enjoy. Plus, the money for the CD goes to producing more of the same.

This original musical organization is promoting peace and harmony through music. Bringing street musicians from around the world to perform sounds of the soul and mind. It is remarkable music from the corners of the world. The video and music demonstrate that music is a universal language that all people are moved by. Everyone should hear, watch, and buy this music and video.

DVD is great to show who the artists are and what they're playing. Good vocals and arrangements of familiar songs. You'll love it!

I heard about Playing for Change in one of the many forwarded emails I receive daily. I usually delete them, but am glad I took the time to check it out. I've followed the project every since. I got an announcement that their CD/DVD was released and immediately purchased the set. It is GREAT! It doesn't disappoint and I'd recommend it to anyone who values the impact of music on our existence.

An outstanding compilation of musicians from around the world. Both the CD and DVD are great, with the DVD adding faces and places to the music on both mediums. If you like world music, reggae or just good live music, you'll love this album. The arrangements are different and interesting. The songs are familiar classics themselves, but you will love them all over again! The artists obviously enjoyed performing, the production team put a lot into the recording and the results speak (or rather sing) for themselves! I first heard this CD in Starbucks and later bought several more for family members from Barnes & Noble (by the way, the store in Augusta GA was great, reserving one for me and getting another in stock before I had to leave the area to visit family). Everyone has loved this album!

Young, middle aged, old folks all declare this to be inspiring and stimulating. The DVD with the recordings was also very nice to have, and makes it easier to absorb the full impact.
