Meet the Author

Kate has tangoed at midnight with a man in blue furry chaps, dueled with flaming swords in the desert, and strutted on bar tops across the world and back. She’s been kissed under the Eiffel Tower, had her butt pinched in Florence, and been serenaded in New Orleans. But she found Happy Ever After in San Francisco with her Magic Man.

Kate's the bestselling author of the Laurel Heights Novels, as well as the Family and Love and Guardians of Destiny series. She's been translated into several languages and is quite proud to say she's big in Slovenia. All her books are about strong, independent women who just want love.

Most days, you can find Kate in her favorite café, working on her latest novel. Sometimes she's wearing a tutu. She may or may not have a jeweled dagger strapped to her thigh...

    Pretty good

I enjoyed the authors writing and liked the story. I was waiting and waiting and waiting for grace to finally tell her sister off. To be honest it was hard to like how much of a pushover she was. Talk about spineless. That's the only issue I had though. :) good, quick read at 224 pages.

I absolutely loved this story. It was romance, but the romance wasn’t the only focus in the book. The family was the focus of the book. It’s easy to see why this book is A Novel of Family and Love.

Grace’s family is her main priority—they are the reason she pretty much doesn’t have a life. Her sisters Chloe and Nell are always taking her for granted, mostly because she never says no to them. She takes care of her dad and Chloe all of the time, and Nell some of the time. She does the cooking, and she works in her father’s business—putting her dreams on hold.

She does all of this without complaining. When her mother died, she promised to take care of her family, and that’s what she’s done all of these years. She’s been more of a mother than a sister, and she’s expected to resolve everything. But when her sister Nell puts her in charge of everything in her wedding, things start to fall apart.

Grace was an amazing character. I loved how she never really thought of herself, even though she was using her family as an excuse to not put herself out there. She played it safe. Most characters that do this annoy me, but the writing style and Grace herself were so unique that I wasn’t annoyed—I understood where Grace was coming from and I was immersed in the book.

I connected with Grace the most. Though she was sometimes a pushover, I loved her personality and I really felt like she was a great person.

Pete is Grace’s best friend, but he’s also very hot. Grace is blind to his attraction towards her, preferring to play it safe. But that never lasts, does it? He was really supportive and patient with Grace, and pushed her to follow her dreams, though she didn’t listen.

There’s a bunch of family drama and hilarious moments, paired with the cutest romance and steamy passion. I definitely recommend this book to people who love family and love. Oh, and dreams coming true. That’s always important :)

This is my favorite Kate Perry book so far!!!

I really love Grace - she's like sleeping beauty in many ways....but then she starts to wake up.  And my favorite romances are just like this one - believable people I'd want to call friends, and friendships that evolve.

    But....can I have Pete?  :O)

    HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

    Loved it!

Wow I adored this book! It reminded me a little of the movie "While you were Sleeping" with the quirky familly traits. But its about a family that grew strong together with three girls and a strong Marine father who had to go on alone when the mother died young. The middle daughter was way over the top of prima dona and abused the older sister incredibly until she snaps, but they all work it out and all find true love.

    Great read

Gracie and Pete's love story is is one that grows from a close friendship to one with so much more. Due to Graces feeling of responibility to take care of her family since her mom died, she feels torn and afraid to commit to anything that will take her away from them......that is until reality sets in. Loved this 550+ page story.

Another great, fast read from Kate Perry. Plenty of "aw&quo

Another great, fast read from Kate Perry. Plenty of "aw" moments and a few unpredictable characters that provide entertainment. The one annoying part of the book is how ridiculous Nell's demands are, and how unbelievable Grace's rationalizations of her actions are. This secondary (obviously) dynamic plays an important role of the book, but is overplayed in its departure from reality. The interaction between the romantic leads is great though.

Grace has raised 3 sisters after her Mother's death when she was young. Now she's having trouble letting go and doing what she wants with her life. Her family takes her for granted and past boyfriends don't last long when they question her obligations. Now her best friend wants to become more and she's running scared.

I enjoyed the book, but would have enjoyed it more if the female lead had shown more backbone, especially with her remarkably unlikeable sister.

A really good book! I thought Grace was insane when I first started this book, but I started to understand where her motivations for her family came from. This book made me laugh and at times want to scream. Read it if you get a chance.

PLAYING FOR KEEPS is the first Kate Perry book I have read but it will not be my last. The ending was well worth the wait while I read from beginning to end. You might ask "is there any other way to read a book?" My answer would be "yes, for books that do not catch my interest with the first few chapters in the beginning - I will read the last couple chapters, at the end, to see if it is worth my time to read the entire book." Who has time to waste on a book that is not interesting?

Well, I can honestly say - I did not have to check the ending to see if this book would be interesting all the way through. One can almost foresee what the outcome will be for Gracie and Pete; however Kate Perry has an interesting way of bringing this to life as she includes the problems and/or the dynamics of other family members, friends, and new characters relevant to the plot. For awhile the reader might think this novel is about the sister, Nel, but Perry weaves the plots together to keep us interested in the upcoming chapters and always brings us back to the relationship growth of Gracie and Pete. By the end of this book, Gracie has shed her doormat shield that she undertook after her mother passed away some fifteen years prior.

I have just ordered the first two books of Perry's Laurel Heights series. I am hoping they are as good as this one.

I had a hard time putting this book down once I started reading. Kate Perry does an excellent job of connecting the reader with the characters. I fell in love with Grace and Pete and I enjoyed how the circumstances Grace experienced felt real and true, and sometimes extremely comical. I will definitely recommend this book to my friends. I hope Kate writes a series with this these sisters.
