Yes, sports fans!, er, grad school fans...Bad boys Fred and Karl are back with an updated version of their best selling self-help guide for grad students. This New and/or Improved Version is stocked with additional content, more lame attempts at humor, and a lower price (Karl threatened to moon the publisher unless his demands were met).

Written with the attitude of a couple ill-mannered schoolboys who exhibit the insight and genius of the Ph.D.'s who wrote it, Playing the Game simplifies even the most complex aspects of grad school.

Authors Frank and Stein have broken down Playing The Game into three hilarious and straightforward sections: Getting In, Getting Through, and Getting the Hell Out. In whatever stage of graduate school you find yourself, rest assured that you will never again grumble, "If only I had known! If only someone had explained this @%#! to me sooner!"

Playing the Game simplifies the entire graduate school experience while imparting comically relevant stories and translating complicated graduate school jargon. This self-help guide helps grad students to comprehensively navigate their graduate school journey from application to matriculation. Unlike most of the material you'll be reading in grad school, Playing the Game is actually intelligible.

What People Are Saying

Mary McKinney Ph.D.
Mary McKinney, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist and Dissertation Coach
This book is lewd, rude and superb! Frank and Stein have written the first guide to grad school from a student's point of view; and the result is an irreverent, humorous and USEFUL book of advice. These foul-mouthed sages will help you get through a master's or doctoral program more quickly, with fewer blunders and less angst. I plan to recommend this book to all the graduate students I coach and teach.

    A bit rough but...

really good... I love the way the authors give the inside scoop on graduate school life from an insider's perspective. They make light of a lot of the things that go on in graduate school, but they also make it clear what is really important if your goal is to graduate (which it probably should be) and what things tend to cause people to get hung up. They relay stories of other un-successful graduate students and teach you to learn from their mistakes. Some parts of the book are meant strictly to make the reader laugh, and others are straight ahead descriptions of people and events. Depending on your sense of humor you might or might not find certain parts of the book difficult to digest. If you're concerned about that, I would suggest buying a regular graduate school survival guide like Getting What You Came For. It's also very good and the two books compliment each other very well.

This book does not tell you much and costs way too much

This book wastes a lot of space and the reader's time. The important things it has to offer could have been summed up in a few sentences: plan ahead, know where you want to go with your thesis/dissertation and professor committee, and begin research as soon as possible. Do not be fooled into wasting your time and money reading the whole thing.

    Excellent!

I was really excited when my public library agreed to purchase this book for their collection (at my request). I was not disappointed. It was both revealing and funny. I definitely recommend this book for any graduate student (regardless of major).

    'Serious'ly Funny

At first glance, some readers might wonder how these authors even got into graduate school, much less earned Ph.D.'s. That would be extremely shallow, though. That was their obvious intent. The hilarious method these authors used was absolute genius. Stripping away all of the arrogance that accompanies a trip into any school of higher education, Playing the Game takes you through graduate school, explaining everything from the perspective of the authors' cheeky alter-egos. This makes for a fun and readable book. Right on target for understanding the graduate school experience.

    Great Graduation Gift!

I received this book as a graduation gift last May. I don't think I can describe the calming effect it had on me. After looking through another book on grad school, I had become kind of nervous and intimidated by what I expected to find there. The casual language and 'regular guy' approach used in this book helped me to see that I had what it takes to succeed. As I move toward the end of my first semester, I'm finding that the authors are right on target with their descriptions of the people you'll meet along the way and how to deal with them. The publisher touts this book as Beavis and Butthead/Good Will Hunting. I'd compare it to the Motley Fools, too. I recommend this book highly. Even though it is non-fiction, it reads like a good novel. Believe me, you won't be able to put it down until you're done! Then you'll want to show the funny parts to all of your friends.
