Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
K-Gr 6--This collection of 12 scripts based on traditional tales includes "East of the Sun, West of the Moon," "The Six Swans," "The Twelve Months," "Una and the Goblin King," and "The Great Flying Ship of Ivan the Impossible." It is not as successful as some of McCullough's earlier volumes. While several of the plays are charming, others do not translate well into this format. Some of the shorter folktales are padded with unfortunate modern slang and unnecessary, cheap laughs, while other, more elaborate tales have been simplified and shortened. Due to the nature of these stories, several involve numerous killings, and the magic inherent in this genre often leads to telling rather than showing (e.g., "Hay Maker is scattering his magic straw. See the snow and frost arise!" or "My shillelagh has turned into a golden sword!"). Of the 18 folktales presented here (3 of the scripts incorporate multiple tales), 11 are European; the others come from Africa, North America, Japan, Java, Hawaii, and Papua. Scores are provided for the six selections in which music is used. Students as young as kindergarten might make good audience members, but performers probably need to be in at least second grade. Simple stage, prop, and costume requirements make these plays accessible to many groups.--Darcy Schild, Schwegler Elementary School, Lawrence, KS
