Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Meagan Albright
The concept of this book, the constant up and down of a toddler who seeks freedom and independence yet still wants mama to pick her up and cuddle, will resonate with many parents and caregivers of young children as the busy little raccoon "can't decide if she'd rather explore on her own or climb back into her mama's arms." The rhyme scheme and word choice seem slightly forced, and the book does not flow well enough to be an excellent choice for either story time or individual reading. The illustrations are softly colored whimsical expressions of the text, but the slightly blurry or muddled quality on some pages detracts from the overall enjoyment of the pictures. The cat that appears on many of the pages would serve as an excellent thread throughout the book if only it appeared on every page instead of sporadically. This book is recommended as an additional purchase for public libraries or school media centers looking to expand their picture book collections. Reviewer: Meagan Albright

PreS

A busy toddler and her devoted, tireless mother spend an eventful day together. From dawn until bedtime, the young raccoon politely requests that Mama pick her up and put her down so she can perform various activities: "Please pick me up, Mama./Sing to me and whirl./Please put me down, Mama./See how fast I twirl!" Cozy, pastel acrylics show a chubby youngster and the patient parent who clearly dotes on her. Everything in their home is soft, round, snug, and inviting. The endpapers-a blue sky with fluffy white clouds at the beginning and a starry night sky at the book's close-also take readers through the day. This tale told in rhyme is a loving tribute to a joyful relationship between child and parent.-Maryann H. Owen, Racine Public Library, WI

Kirkus Reviews
From the moment she wakes until bedtime, a young raccoon alternates between seeking her mother's attention and voicing her yearning for independence. Repetition breeds familiarity in these earnest requests as the youngster's activity dominates her day; brief lines leading to a soothing rhythm: "Please pick me up, Mama. / Tie my soft blue hat. / Please put me down, Mama. / Now I'll dress the cat!" The child's unadulterated delight brings forth a nimble "la...la...la..." as her mother swings her around; spiraling words drift across the spacious background like a cloud. Warm autumn hues-rich, buttery oranges and crisp, apple greens-permeate the soft acrylic illustrations. Thick brush strokes in blacks, creams and browns naturally blend, adding depth to bushy tails and loving faces. Small details, including the amicable cat carrying the child's shoe in its mouth, add comforting images to the warm family home. While a plethora of saccharine mother/child stories exist, this small selection has both sweetness and spunk. (Picture book. 2-4)
