Please Stop Helping Us: How Liberals Make It Harder for Blacks to Succeed

( 9 )

Overview

Why is it that so many efforts by liberals to lift the black underclass not only fail, but often harm the intended beneficiaries?

In Please Stop Helping Us, Jason L. Riley examines how well-intentioned welfare programs are in fact holding black Americans back. Minimum-wage laws may lift earnings for people who are already employed, but they price a disproportionate number of blacks out of the labor force.

Affirmative action in higher education is intended to address past discrimination, but the result is fewer black college graduates than would otherwise exist. And so it goes with everything from soft-on-crime laws, which make black neighborhoods more dangerous, to policies that limit school choice out of a mistaken belief that charter schools and voucher programs harm the traditional public schools that most low-income students attend.
In theory these efforts are intended to help the poor—and poor minorities in particular. In practice they become massive barriers to moving forward.

Please Stop Helping Us lays bare these counterproductive results. People of goodwill want to see more black socioeconomic advancement, but in too many instances the current methods and approaches aren’t working. Acknowledging this is an important first step.

An excellent thought provoking read. Riley explains simply how the left has managed to box African Americans into a corner.
How can you vote against Santa Claus? By keeping them needful of govt. lessens their need to crate a better self.

Agreed with this because I lived through this.

Every Mr. Riley says about criminality and culture in this book is true. I'm Hispanic, and as a kid I was frequently made fun of by other Hispanic kids because I performed well in school. They claimed I was trying to "act white" because I read and didn't speak with a barrio accent. I developed an accent to fit in at school that was different than the one I used in other aspects of my life, and I saw many of my friends fall in to lives of crime because in their families it was respectable to represent the neighborhood gangs. I believe the culture of criminality is one of the greatest threats to Hispanic and Black communities, but no one wants to speak openly about it, until now.

Great book! All leaders need to read this.

Completely and clearly written. All of our national and local leaders need to read this, even if only to say that they have read it. Jason Riley is to be commended for the courage to write this book.
    Well done!

This book does little more than promote a "Foutainhead"

This book does little more than promote a "Foutainhead" type philosphy where those born into poverty are somehow to blame for their plight. How soon we forget the laws in place forbidding minorities or immigrants from voting, owning a business, attending a school or pursuing certain professions (think anti-irish setiment in the east or the anti-chineese leagues out west) - every generation of immigrants hates the next generation trying to come in. Facts are facts: Over 500 nations existed w/ over 3million people living here when America was "Discovered" by Europeans looking to make money exploiting new trade routes. Small pox DID decimate the native population, be it intentionally spead or not. Roosevelt's "New Deal" and Johnson's "Great Society" COULD have worked if these programs weren't cut off at the knees by those promoting their own greed and the special interests of big business, big oil, big pharm - - take your pick. I DO agree w/ the author on one point: We purpetuate a culture of violence where intelligence is ridiculed and scorned while agression and criminality is rewarded. We need to move beyond the old stereotypes and stop blaming "them" for all our problems. We need to pick ourselves up and stop making excuses. That said, all-in-all this book is little more than propaganda for the Faux News crowd
