Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The "Rookie Reader" series has been around for years and this is a new subseries entitled "Rookie Read to Learn: First Science: Me and My World." The wind can be beneficial or it can cause harm. It this early science reader, all the actions are positive. At first there is no wind and then it starts to blow gently and as it picks up force and speed it blows the clothes drying on the clothesline and finally it is strong enough to help the young girls get her kite up into the sky. After the story is finished there is a brief blurb about the author and illustrator followed by pages of activities and experiments. Kids are asked to complete sentences with rebus clues to make it easier, recognize patterns, think about measurement, and work at identifying left and right. The final page contains a list of the 22 words that make up the simple story. The illustrations in this reader focus on the girl of African origin more than details in the scenes, although there are a few that lend themselves to further discussion and learning.
