Once the game begins, there is no tearing your gaze away.

The Pleasure Wars, Book 2

Her mother’s madness and her father’s and brother’s irresponsibility have relegated Lady Portia to the life of a wallflower. The only shining light in her life is her best friend, Ava, who is suffering a rift with her own brother.

Portia’s quest to help takes her to the notorious Donville Masquerade in the hells, where—behind the safety of a mask—she witnesses shocking public acts of sin. And succumbs to the touch of Marquis Miles Weatherfield.

Unfortunately, they’re discovered. And now, tainted by scandal, she and Miles are destined for a marriage neither of them want. But Portia makes a bargain that raises even Miles’s eyebrows.

In return for saving her mother from the asylum, Portia will do anything Miles wants in bed. Shocked by his driving desire for Portia, Miles agrees. As they explore every wicked desire, every forbidden act that pleases them, they discover something that goes far deeper than flesh. But the lies that brought them together could be the very wedge that drives them apart.

Warning: This book contains wicked encounters, erotic voyeurism, lies, a brief threesome, and unexpected kindnesses.

As posted on The Smutty Kitty reviewed by Witty Kitty 5 out of 5 Licks Lady Portia has a heavy burden on her shoulders. She is trying to protect her family from the cruelty of society if anyone finds out her mother is mentally ill and from her brother who wants to commit their mother to a madhouse. Her one escape is to visit her friend Ava, the heroine from the first book in this series, who is trying to locate the whereabouts of her brother. Ava informs Portia that she thinks he may be hiding at the Donville Masquerade, curious about the things that occur there Portia decides to risk being ruined and go there herself. While there she ends up in the arms of a former friend of her brother’s, the Marques of Weatherfield, Miles. Once thoroughly compromised and on her way to the altar, Portia offers Miles a deal, he may use her body in any way he desires as long as he saves her mother from the madhouse. Miles is more than happy to take that bargain and you will enjoy reading about. Jess Michaels has a wonderful way of writing a beautiful story and weaving it together with hot sex. This story had me laughing, crying and my mouth hanging open in shock at the surprises along the way. I couldn’t put it down until I knew what was going to happen with this wonderful characters. So looking forward to finding out what happens to Ava’s brother. Spring is not the only reason to look forward April when the 3rd in this series is available.

** spoiler alert ** Pleasuring the Lady is the second book in the Pleasure Wars Series. We met Lady Portia in Taken by the Duke and Miles Weatherfield in An Introduction to Pleasure. Initially, I thought Portia and Liam would pair off but it was not to be. I was a little bit disappointed but after reading Pleasuring the Lady and reading how Miles and Portia fell in love, I changed my mind. I know now that Portia and Liam would not be a good match. The story starts after Ava has married Christian with Liam not talking to his sister Ava. Ava, worried about her brother mentions this to her best friend Portia. Because Ava helped Portia before, Portia agrees to look for him. Having heard that Liam was last seen at the notorious Donville Masquerade, Portia decides to go. At the masquerade, Marquis Miles Weatherfield spots a masked beauty and is instantly drawn to her. Portia tries to avoid him because she is afraid that he would recognize her since Miles was her brother’s mate years ago although they aren't friends anymore. She doesn't have any luck at finding Liam so she returns to the Masquerade. She ends up getting saved by Miles from a drunk gentleman at the party then they get caught by Portia’s brother in a very compromising situation. To save her reputation, Miles decides to marry her. Before the wedding, we find out that Portia’s mother has a form of Alzheimer's dementia (although it is not mentioned in the book but it does seem like it) and that her brother is threatening to commit her to an asylum. Portia strikes up a bargain with Miles that she would do anything he wanted or demanded in bed just so her mother would not be committed. Unbeknownst to her, Miles had already thought of supporting Portia and her mother but he agrees to Portia’s bargain anyway. Once they are married, both of them can’t keep their hands off each other and they start to fall in love. Miles, scarred by a previous experience is scared of history repeating itself and does not open to Portia as much. He also tries to set her up with someone else of his choosing to hide his insecurities. In the end, he is able to overcome his fears and open his heart to Portia. I love Portia and Miles’ story. I thought Portia was the perfect woman to save Miles from his depravity. With Portia being so innocent, I felt it was the perfect fit for Miles. I also loved Portia’s transformation from being timid and shy to a strong woman worthy of Miles’ love. I recommend this story to those who love erotic romance, redemption, and strong heroines. Jess Michaels writes such heartfelt, intriguing and erotic historical's that I just can't get enough. I love this series. Portia and Miles were such great characters they had a very sad upbringing but both shined as adults I spite of it. Portia was determined to make her situation work to her advantage and do what needed to be done to protect her mother and Miles was determined to care for Portia and her mother but guard his heart because he was unworthy of love.  If you've not read Jess Michaels then I highly recommend you remedy that.

I gave this book only a two rating. The author is definitely talented in her writing skills but the latter part of this story was ruined when the husband actually arranged for his wife to be pleasured by two men while he watched, something I found totally humiliating and disgusting. If he was afraid to profess his love and wanted to push her away he could have acted like a mature adult and simply ended the marriage with words, not a show to total disrespect for her. That aspect of the story just went too far for my taste and really ruined what could have been a wonderful story of developing love within marriage. I normally archive books to read again in the future but this one will be deleted because of such a sick scene.

This is the 2nd book in the Pleasure Wars Series. Lady Portia has spent a life time being hurt and disappoint by others. She has sacrificed her life to care for and protect her mentally ill mother, her brother keeps them hidden away with little funds and is looking for an excuse to place his mother in the madhouse. Portia’s best friend Ava (heroine for the 1st book) is desperate to find her brother and believes he may be hiding at the Donville Masquerade in the hells. Curious about the things that occur at the Masquerade, Portia decides to go there and look for Ava’s brother, instead she finds herself in the arms of the Marques of Weatherfield (Miles) and former friend to her brother. Compromised and headed for the altar, Portia decides to bargain with Miles, he may have her body in any way he pleases and he will save her mother from the asylum. Miles eagerly agrees to the bargain but can they put their emotions aside and just enjoy each other’s bodies or will their hearts soon follow? Wonderful read! I loved Portia and Miles, the story is very sweet and emotional but it also has a very hot and sexy side that keeps you wishing it wouldn’t end. Looking forward to the 3rd book in the steamy series.

Portia is the friend of Ava who is the heroine from book 1.  She hasn't been living an easy life since she has to take care of her mother who is sick and she has a brother who doesn't care about helping.  While talking to Ava, they learned that Ava's brother, Earl of Windbury, was seen at the Donville Masquerade.  Being the good friend that she is, Portia decides to go to the Masquerade and find the Earl.  Instead she discover something more erotic and also runs into Marquis Miles Weatherfield. Marquis Miles Weatherfield made an appearance in one of Jess's previous book, An Introduction to Pleasure.  I love his character in there because she was a gentleman with the heroine.  In this book, I love him even more.  He chooses to marry Portia after they are caught in a compromising position by her brother.  But he also takes care of her mother as well.  The passion that both Portia and Miles have gets even hotter as they both begin to fall for each other even though Miles promise to not fall in love.  There are appearances from Ava and Christian (book 1 H/H) and I was hoping for a reappearances of Viscount Andrew Callis from AITP since he and Miles are friend.  Even so, I love this story.  I just can't wait for Liam's story next!

This is book 2 in the Pleasure Wars series.  We met the heroine, Portia, in Taken by the Duke and the hero, Miles, in An Introduction to Pleasure. Lady Portia has spent her lifetime being a wallflower. During a conversation with her best friend, Ava, Portia sees an opportunity to make her friend happy and to try something daring. Ava's "missing" brother has been seen at the Donville Masquerade in the hells. Portia will do anything to put a smile back on her friend's face, even venture into the hells. Marquis Miles Weatherfield is instantly draw to the mysterious masked lady and draws her into conversation. Portia has known Miles almost her whole life and barely talks to him in fear of being recognized. She quickly draws herself away and disappears into the night. Several nights have passed and Miles is hoping to see his masked lady again. Portia is determined to find the brother of her best friend and ventures to the masquerade again where she gets help from Miles after some unwanted attention from another party goer Miles and Portia can't seem to fight their attraction for each other and end up being found in a compromising position by Portia's brother.  The only way to save their reputations is to marry. Portia is terrified that her brother will put their mother in an asylum when she gets married so she makes a deal with Miles. She will do anything that he wants to in bed in exchange for keeping her mother safe.  Will their marriage become more than just a marriage in name? I really enjoyed this story and it was nice to see Ava and Christian from Taken by the Duke again. We see Portia blossom from a wallflower to someone with confidence that finally stands up for herself.  We also see the growth of Miles. He realizes that the way he grows up does not define the type of man that he becomes.  As with all Jess Michaels books, this book is NOT for the faint of heart!  There is lots of explicit love scenes.

Portia hasn't lived an easy life.  With a mother whose madness is well known, a father who liked to gamble, and a brother just like  her father, Portia has become a wallflower.  She knows no respectable man will marry her so she's resigned her life to living with  her mother and servant Potts in a cottage far away from the rest of society.  Afraid to leave her mother for fear of what her brother will do,  Portia is forced to live in horrible conditions and with limited food.   Worse than a lonely life, she feels the grief of her best friend Ava Windbury who has been unable to reconnect with her brother since  she married his enemy Christian Rothcastle.  Her search will lead her to Donville Masquerade a place where sex and sin go hand  and hand.  It's here that the elite go to find sex and to gamble.  Ava has said that it's rumored that her brother has been seen there,  a place where any woman who goes will have her reputation ruined. Portia has never felt the intimate touch of a man, the closest she's ever been to sex is the drawings she found among her brother's  belongings.  That is until she puts on a mask and goes to the Donville Masquerade and finds Miles Weatherfield.  Miles is drawn to  the woman with the mask, unaware that below the mask is Portia.  Portia has never been attracted to Miles like she is when he  kisses her the first time, but Miles has no idea that under the mask is long time friend and occasional dance partner Portia.   It's here that she's found in a compromising position with Miles by her brother and it's either marry or she will be ruined. Scared not only for her future but her mother's she will agree to do whatever Miles wants in bed to save her mother from the asylum  that her brother wants her sent to.  She will discover passion like she's never before experienced in her life, but how far will she go  before it grows to be too much for her?  When feelings become involved can they let go of their pasts and learn to care for one another? I must say that I loved Taken by the Duke, but Pleasuring the Lady took my love for her work to a whole new level.  These two stories  were so different and these characters so complex.  I loved every second of this book as Portia learned what true passion is and  as she learns to let another care for her in a way she's never been cared for her entire life.  I look forward to the next book in the  series because I know if there's one thing I can guarantee it's that the next book in this series will be just as great if not even  better than the first two books.  Oh and if you haven't had a chance to read Taken by the Duke yet, you'll want to because it's  well worth the read, 5 stars. ***ARC provided by author in exchange for a honest review***

PLEASURING THE LADY by Jess Michaels is an exciting Regency Historical Romance set in 1814 London. #2 in “The Pleasure Wars”,but can be read as a stand alone. See,”Taken by the Duke”. What an interesting tale of a man who believes he can not fall in love or love anyone and the woman who proves him wrong. Join, Lady Portia and Marquis Miles Weatherfield on a journey of discovery of both their passion and their feelings for each other. They discovery some things are far more deeper than flesh. Filled with lies, secrets, voyeurism, passion, scandal, sizzling sensuality,a brief threesome encounter, kindness, very wicked encounters, and the power of love. A very erotic romance! Well written! The sensual encounters is well written with taste, but “Pleasuring The Lady” is not all about the sensual encounters,it is so much more than an erotic tale! Ms. Michaels is a masterful storyteller to passion and love. I love this series, and am looking forward to the next installment. Well done!! A must read if you enjoy historical romances, with a few twists and turns, as well as sensual encounters of the loving kind. Received for an honest review from the author.
