Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A charming book for beginning readers about our bird friends to the south, the penguins, especially for those not fortunate enough to see them in a zoo. Penguins seem to be enjoying a resurgence of popularity, and if readers delight in the antics of Tacky the penguin, they will enjoy learning about different kinds of penguins in this book. The illustrations are attractive, and the facial expressions of the penguins bring a sense of whimsy and friendliness to this creature. The simple text contributes to holding interest, and allows for a variety of reading strategies, depending on ability. The final page has illustrations of each type of penguin and instructs the readers to match them to another page in the book¾fun. There are suggestions in the beginning of this book about using it to develop reading skills. These can be used equally well independently or in a classroom setting. Penguins are a lot like us—they play in the snow, they can't fly but love to swim, they can look different, they protect their babies and they live in families. Children may think of other similarities or differences between humans and animals after reading this book. 2000, Scholastic, $3.99. Ages 4 to 8. Reviewer: Elizabeth Young

Not as informative as I thought it would be. It's a fun read I guess for children, but my daughter didn't learn anything from it. I was pretty disappointed with it.
