Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
A fun picture book with a unique approach to the illustrations which will capture the attention of young readers. All kids who love hiding treasures in their pockets (and what kid doesn't) will love the concept of this offering. Henry, Henrietta, and their son Junior lives in a cluttered and disorganized house where they get to the point of not being able to find anything they need or want. They come up with a brilliant idea of sewing hundreds of pockets on their clothing where their stuff can be conveniently stored. A great idea until they realize they can't remember which pocket holds which items. Finally, a solution becomes obvious with the help of their neighbors. The illustrations are the best part of this offering. With a combination of pen and ink drawings with collages of actual photographs, Menchin gives the reader a real idea of just how much stuff the pockets hold. Two large, full-spread, foldout pages of the father and mother with their pockets brimming are the highlight of the illustrations. Kids will want to make and stuff their own pockets after reading this title. 2000, Harcourt, Ages 4 to 8, $16.00. Reviewer: Betsy Barnett—Children's Literature
School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-Henry and Henrietta Bunch live with their son in a cluttered house. When the couple cannot find their pet or their child in the mess, Henry decides, "We need pockets," and proceeds to sew "-pockets on top of pockets. And plenty of secret pockets." The house is neat and tidy until Henrietta realizes that the missing sofa is tucked away in one of the myriad pockets. Husband and wife agree to empty everything out into the yard, and they inadvertently host a yard sale. Order is again restored-until Junior's birthday when presents and chaos abound. This story is mundane and perplexing. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for the layout of text; sometimes it undulates across the pages, while at other times it appears in block format. The illustrations are a collage of small photographic images incorporated into cartoonlike drawings. Two foldout pages reveal Henry and Henrietta in full-pocket regalia. Even though the artwork covers the pages at all angles and juxtapositions, it is flat and lifeless and adds more confusion to an already muddled story. Young readers will have a difficult time with the abundant verbiage in this uninspired effort.-Tina Hudak, Takoma Park Maryland Library, MD Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
