Overview

J. Ivor Hanson, born in Port Talbot in 1898, was a compulsive writer who kept a journal from a very young age until his death at the age of 94. His vivid account of service in the First World War as a signaller with the Royal Field Artillery is published here for the first time. His own experiences, the officers and men he served alongside, and the horror and humour of trench life were all the subjects of Hanson's intense scrutiny and incisive wit. A particularly powerful section of the diary recounts the German Army's crushing Spring Offensive in March 1918, when the British Army on the Western Front was almost pushed back to the Channel coast.
