Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Lavonne M. Adams, PhD, RN, CCRN (Southwestern Adventist University)
Description: This book provides information about the various aspects of intravenous therapy, including fluid and electrolyte management, administration techniques, and intravenous equipment. The previous edition was published in 1997.
Purpose: The purpose is to "provide the most current base of knowledge available [on IV therapy] to those who share the responsibility of ensuring high-quality infusion care to patients in a diversity of clinical settings." The objectives are worthy and the the book meets them.
Audience: The book targets practicing clinicians, educators, and students, and it would be suitable for use as a reference. The author and contributors are credible authorities.
Features: Various aspects of intravenous therapy are addressed, including its assessment, monitoring, management of fluid and electrolytes, equipment and techniques, and specific applications to patient populations. The book is well-organized and has many useful illustrations and tables of appropriate educational quality.
Assessment: This is a useful guide to the various aspects of IV therapy. Its organization and clarity should allow easy referencing by practicing clinicians, educators, and students. The detail, specificity, and breadth in dealing with a wide variety of applications make it much more suited to be a reference than a textbook assigned as part of a class. It would be a valuable reference book to have available in any clinical area in which IV therapy is administered. In the ever-changing field of IV therapy, a new edition is justified.
