PreS-Gr 1-- Although Mom thinks that John's dog, Plunk, dreams only about food and Dad is convinced he dreams of chasing rabbits, John supplies more imaginative explanations for Plunk's yelps and twitches. John knows that Plunk has visions of himself paddling an Indian canoe, greeting visitors from outer space, or stalking a giant cat. But everyone agrees that Plunk's happiest dreams include John. The watercolor paintings ably illustrate the canine fantasies John recounts for Plunk. Because Lamb's pictures of people are less successful than her animal creations, John's limited visual presence is fortunate. Plunk dreaming sprawls across two-page spreads, a large, golden-haired presence. Although Plunk is not as immediately engaging as Pinkerton or Clifford, the book's well-designed pages and simple text could earn him a place in story hours. Dog lovers will probably give their dreaming pets another look after sharing Plunk's adventures. --Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, MN
