Description: This book serves as a reference guide for those who desire a readily available resource as they perform clinical duties. The book's smaller form factor and spiral binding allow for it to accompany the individual for reference when needed. It is written in bulleted form and divided into over 40 chapters. The previous third edition was published in 2016.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to serve as a succinct yet comprehensive reference guide for anesthesia providers in a portable, easily accessible format. The content comes from highly vetted, peer-reviewed texts and up-to-date research. This new edition has added content in regional anesthesiology, POCUS and echocardiography, chronic pain management, and ERAS protocols. As the information includes both basic and advanced topics in a highly organized manner, the book is intended for a wide audience (e.g., students to experienced providers).
Audience: According to the authors, this book is intended for a wide audience within the realm of anesthesia providers. It covers a vast array of information and is useful to both beginning (students and residents) and advanced practitioners (fellows and attending anesthesiologists). Overall, the book meets these intentions and is highly organized for all readers.
Features: This book covers an impressive amount of information and delivers it in an easily accessible, portable, highly organized, and well-researched manner. With over 40 chapters, it is comprehensive in its approach. Many of the chapters are broken down by surgical subtype (e.g., orthopedic anesthesia, bariatric anesthesia, cardiovascular anesthesia, etc.), and there is also extensive content on additional topics such as regional techniques in anesthesia, procedures, ultrasound and echocardiography (with associated illustrations), perioperative assessment, airway management, chronic pain, and pharmacology. The best aspect is the book's ease of reference and comprehensiveness. An anesthesia provider could easily reference this book to review anesthetic considerations of specific surgical procedures or ultrasound techniques for a certain regional block. The book additionally contains multiple appendixes including various treatment algorithms, Spanish phrases pertinent to anesthesia, and equations and formulae. Since the book is intended as a pocket reference as opposed to a formal text, it purposefully does not include extensive detail on all topics and instead focuses on the most pertinent information to maintain its conciseness.
Assessment: This book is a unique and highly useful resource for anesthesia providers that unequivocally achieves its objectives. It is portable and well organized and contains an appropriate level of information. Moreover, the fourth edition now includes regional anesthesia techniques, ultrasound, and echocardiography, which are important topics in anesthesia practice today. Additionally, the illustrations in the fourth edition have a notably higher quality when compared to prior editions of this book.
