Description: This is a handy and well-indexed guide to aid the professional who is actively counseling the lactating mother. It contains pertinent information on techniques, problem-solving, and drug information.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a resource for quick access to references used to counsel the lactating mother. There is a definite need for this sort of guide that makes the information quickly accessible. The book meets the authors' objectives.
Audience: The book is for all professionals who counsel breastfeeding mothers, whether or not the professional has been trained specifically as a lactation consultant. I believe this book is appropriate for the health professional who already has been trained as a lactation consultant. The authors are well known in the field.
Features: The best feature about this book is that it is small enough to fit in a pocket, but still contains a great deal of data. The references are the most useful feature of this handbook. It has the right balance of illustrations, and it is well indexed and easy to use. However, the printing slants.
Assessment: This guide is extremely well planned and useful for the lactation consultant who already has a background of knowledge of the topic, but needs a handy, quick reference source. The extensive listing of drugs used during breastfeeding is essential to the lactation consultant. I highly recommend this book.
